This is Symplocarpus foetidus or skunk cabbage. Note the mature spathe at the base. These leaf like structures protect the flower or the spadix which is shown more closely in www.flickr.com/photos/14643312@N02/25924940101. Found in a spring fed swampy area near the Dowagiac River.

Botany Bay Plantation is a 4,630 acre Wildlife Management Area located on the northeast corner of Edisto Island, South Carolina
Who is Mrs. Pepper and why is this her tree?
Mrs. Pepper was the late owner of Botany Bay Plantation and when she and her husband were adding this pond for wildlife preservation and fishing, she wanted this stately oak preserved.
So, Mr. Pepper carved a niche out of the pond to provide space for the tree.
Pretty neat.

Good morning everyone! Most of the country is experiencing some inclement weather so I thought I'd brighten and warm everyone up a bit with a shot from the beach. The is the famous Boneyard Beach at Botany Bay. Many petrified trees line the beaches of Botany Bay, which is just south of Charleston, and there are several that are closer to the shoreline. When the tide is right the waves rush back and forth, surrounding the trees. A somewhat long exposure provides a surreal effect to an already surreal scene.
