Seeing a Northern Shoveler is always a treat for me, but I didn't particularly expect to see this handsome dude at the pond where the snow geese and Sandhill cranes had congregated. Not only did I see him, he gave me several poses before I decided I'd better get back to the cranes and geese.

The second day we were in New Mexico the forecast said rain. We (well, not me) even considered sleeping in instead of going to the wetlands and risk it being wet and miserable instead of just cold like the day before.
It turned out to be a bit cloudy, that was all. And there was a sunrise!
I went back to Bosque del Apache for more cranes, geese, landscapes of ponds and sunsets. I can't get enough of the place. Bosque del Apache, New Mexico.
Harris Hawk who allowed us to (attempt to) photograph her and her offspring in flight. She had just been rewarded with some meat. The two photos below are included because they are sitting on my car and even left a momento on my roof.
Was surprised to find a Harrier just sitting on a branch (sorry about the pink tape on the branch). He was just out of reach for a clear shot at 500 mm, but I was happy to come away with this. Normally find these birds hunting and flying quickly over the field grasses.
It's a bit more interesting to have something other than a solid blue sky in the background; clouds or scenery adds a nice touch.
Beautiful sunny afternoon at Bosque Del Apache. The lanndscape is lovely and makes this a wonderful place to take photos.
The week has been a blur so I thought I post one from last weekend. A pair of Northern Shoveler's streaking through the steely light of the morning.

There are a few photos of this roadrunner before this, showing it sunning itself and of course running. But in this photo and the one below, I caught a behavior I'd never heard of. I was taking pictures and all of a sudden, the roadrunner flattened itself as much as possible. I thought there might be a raptor overhead but there wasn't. It was like it was trying to blend into the earth and make itself invisible. Then the roadrunner ducked into the little hole on it's right (see below) and it flushed out a bunch of little birds from that bush. It was trying to catch its breakfast! Roadrunners eat lizards (and small birds as it turrns out). Nothing was caught in this attempt so the roadrunner just went back to sunning itself in the cold morning air. I was thrilled to be able to see and document this interesting behavior.
