October 11 is National Bookshop Day!

Did you know the movie, The Sting was inspired by real-life con artists Fred and Charley Gondorff who were the subjects of a 1940 book The Big Con: The Story of the Confidence Man by David Maurer.

lewes is nice. but the weather wasn't

I found this little place for washing the hands in a corner of a book shop in Zurich. I loved the dried pink roses that had been put together and the clean little basin.

I usually don't go for pink, especially pink roses.

...Behold the myriad of sparkling treasure within the cave (and this is only one side of it, plus there's an entrance lobby stacked with books too)

Came across this antiquarian bookshop whilst wondering around Paris. Shot on Kodachrome 64. No adjustment to the colours. From what I remember this was taken at full aperture in order to render the grill in front of the window out of focus.

In Venice, water has spared nothing, not even the volumes of the famous "Acqua Alta" bookshop, known throughout the world because it has always used gondolas, boats and tanks to shelter its volumes from the tides. This time, even they could do nothing against the 187 cm of water that invaded the city. Diana, one of the library's employees, tried to do everything possible to save them during the night, but she had to give up. "The damages are enormous - he explains on the phone - We are used to high water, but we didn't expect it exactly that. It's a blow to the heart". There are so many new books lost, but it hurts, says Diana, to see even the oldest and least valuable ones wet. Despite the pain and chaos left by the night, in the morning the bookshop opened on time, giving way to the usual coming and going of tourists who love reading and armed with a camera. "Our name is a challenge to this phenomenon. This time we lost the battle, but not the war."

Abbey Bookshop, 29 Rue de la Parcheminerie, Paris

This bookshop has been open in the Bridge Centre since 2021 and it is overflowing with books, but it is likely to have to close soon as Portsmouth City Council look to redevelop the Bridge Centre.

Tim and I both enjoy reading at bedtime, in fact, I find it difficult to settle down to sleep if I haven't looked at a book, even if only for a couple of minutes!

Do you have a favourite author? I'm not into anything too heavy - I suppose I have to admit my favourite genre is 'rom-com' but books I've particularly enjoyed have been any by write/actor/comedian Danny Wallace, "Us" by David Nicholls and "About a Boy" by Nick Hornby (the book is better than the film). Tim is a fan of Ben Elton's books although there hasn't been anything new for a while plus Peter James. Although Tim's dyslexic, he enjoys heavier themes than me! (JJ prefers non-fiction to fiction!)

The second-hand (used) bookshop is owned by Richard Barrett.

I tried to smooth-out people with long exposure but, apparently, people don't really move when in a bookshop!

Between newer, nondescript buildings, on a busy street in Tokyo, there's this old bookshop, selling second hand books and manga. Like a remainder of an almost lost era...

Blaenau Ffestiniog. North Wales

In almost every city you can find an old bookshop like this.

Despite the random look of the place, I bet the owner could find whatever you asked for.

The Bookshop has now moved to the Library, next to the Café.

White and orange cat at the Acqua Alta bookshop in Venice, Italy.

Tills Bookshop, long an institution on the southside, near the Meadows in Edinburgh. The other year the owners announced they were calling it a day, and many book lovers in the city worried that was it, but fortunately it has been tidied up and continuing under new management. It was closed this day as I was passing on my way to an appointment, but as I'm not in this part of town too often I snapped a few quick pics with my phone on the hoof.

I love the Victorian exuberance of this shopfront in Hay-on-Wye. I wanted to include this in the collage I created of doorways from Hay-on-Wye but due to the wider doorway it did not match the formatting I needed to fit the photo into the poster.
