Tirente was the leader of the group of Maasai women who came to welcome us to the centre. She said that for her community, books were essential as they brought knowledge and knowledge is power. She said that she and the other women with her wanted their children to be better educated than them so that they could have more prosperous futures. Their community is very reliant on livestock but the drought means that they often their animals die and they have no other livelihood.

These three boys come to the centre to read and use the internet whenever they can. Unfortunately they don't have a great deal of time as after school they work for their families and by the time they are finished it is dark. But at weekends an in school holidays they come to the centre as much as they can. They like to read fiction books as well as books on science, langauges and other school subjects. They were amazed I couldn't speak more than one langauge- they each speak at least three.
