I walked down to the roof garden over the Palace des Congrès this morning so I could take some photo of the wrapped up flower tubs.

Sadly the lovely sunshine from yesterday had gone and all the photos I got looked a bit flat, so I made a collage out of the better ones.

It gives you an idea, although they haven't been knitted, it's materials all joined together.

Better viewed large and thank you for your favourites. :O)

One of my favorite sights last spring and a blast to share it with Ajit Menon and Sandra Herber!

We check on this Osprey nest every couple of days hoping to catch something interesting like a fish delivery or even fledging. This is the kind of day it was.

The A-Bomb Dome is the surviving part of a building that was close to the center of the first atomic bomb explosion on August 6, 1945. The building, which was designed by a Czech architect in 1915, had been used as the Hiroshima Prefectural Industrial Promotion Hall. It stands as the symbol of Hiroshima, the "Peace City". More information at visithiroshima.net/world_heritage/a-bomb_dome.html

I also took a daytime photo of this building, which can be seen at flic.kr/p/Hua3M7

This was the hardest and the most messiest photo shoot ever! The hard part was dropping the strawberry on the target. Kept missing it...talk about hand - eye coordination, oh and also pressing the shuter button in time! It's best to have a extra pair of hands.

Lesson learnt. Do not use double Cream. Doesn't splash as well. I Had to water it down! I think single cream would be ideal.

“Maybe we should develop a Crayola bomb as our next secret weapon. A happiness weapon. A beauty bomb. And every time a crisis developed, we would launch one. It would explode high in the air - explode softly - and send thousands, millions, of little parachutes into the air. Floating down to earth - boxes of Crayolas. And we wouldn't go cheap, either - not little boxes of eight. Boxes of sixty-four, with the sharpener built right in. With silver and gold and copper, magenta and peach and lime, amber and umber and all the rest. And people would smile and get a little funny look on their faces and cover the world with imagination."

"Everything was black,... and somehow, through it, I heard him calling my name"

Ikeda was 6 on that day, playing with his friend on the roof of the Nagasaki University Hospital,... less than 1km from where the atomic bomb detonated.

Luckily, a few moments before, he had decided to go back down stairs and so was shielded by the heavy concrete walls of the building.

He talked about the horrors, the glass, the dead, and worse, the dying,...

What stayed though was his words about his friend.

Ikeda's family survived,... his friend was not so lucky. His whole family had perished.

One of the nurses that came to Nagasaki with the rescue teams took him in. They went back to Kokura together.

After Ikeda retired, he started talking about his experiences of that day.....

And he started looking for his friend,... he took out ads in the papers, went to Kokura to ask around, and even appeared on TV looking for his friend from that day.

All he found were stories,...

Unconfirmed, so I won't save them here on the internet till flickr dies,....

Suffice it to say that,... some people like Ikeda can somehow come out of a day so horrible in one piece, more or less. They manage to keep going, to rebuild, to move forward, to live,...

And some people don't.

Fifteen GE model CM30-8 locos were built by Goninan for Australian National in the early 1990s. In 1998 they were purchased by Chicago Freightcar Leasing Australia, later to become RailFirst Asset Management. At the time this photograph was taken, these were the only three of the class in regular use, although others were avaiable for lease.
