They say there's a big winter storm approaching the California coast tonight. As frequently happens, the surf started to rise well in advance of the storm. The waves were turbulent, and there was plenty of spume as the wind increased. It was one of those days when even the boldest of surfers stayed out of the water.
Thanks for your visit and all of your support. Hope everyone is enjoying a great holiday season.

in Lake Onega Pogost.
During the ice-free period can be reached from the northern island by boat from Petrozavodsk, Russia.
The outstanding building is the 35 meter high Transfiguration, which is crowned with 22 domes. It is regarded as the boldest preserved timber in Russia.
It is attributed to the legendary architect Nestor, who is said to have after completion in 1714 his ax hurled into Lake Onega,
"So one there was never, never get a second and there will never be one," he called allegedly in the process.
Altogether there are about 60 historic wooden buildings in Kizhi.
Kishi Pogost is an open-air museum.

A shy duckling that was part of a group of five siblings (I assumed), which I stumbled upon at the edge of the main pond on Dawlish Warren Nature Reserve. I immediately froze and the ducklings quickly trotted off back to the water's edge, from where they watched me for a short while. Then the boldest member of the group seemed to decide I was no threat and trotted back up onto the small, shady clearing to continue foraging in the sand - and the other siblings gradually followed suit, this one last of all. In reality, part of the reason I froze was because I expected a protective mother duck to appear at any moment and launch an attack on me. But it didn't happen and the five ducklings seemed to be alone, possibly orphans. Several weeks later I did see what I think was the same group of five siblings on the pond, now young adult mallard ducks (Anas platyrhynchos), and they swam over to me in hope of food (they were to be disappointed!). The Kiss
Auguste Rodin Sculpture Reproduction
Auguste Rodin (1840-1917)
This famous group was to have been part of the monumental Gates of Hell, commissioned from Rodin by the future Museum of Decorative Arts in Paris, a work which was not cast in bronze until after the artist's death. The two leaves of this door, covered with a crowd of intertwined characters, illustrate Dante's Inferno.
Among these figures, The Kiss was supposed to evoke an episode of the tragic passion of Paolo Malatesta for his sister-in-law Francesca de Rimini.
In the end, Auguste Rodin decided not to include it in the composition and presented it to the public as a sculpture on its own.
The work was an immediate success and was made in marble and bronze in different sizes.
Among the couples of lovers, so frequent in the work of Rodin, The Kiss is far from being the boldest. Yet it has always been considered as the symbol of sensuality and its extraordinary fame can be explained by its powerful sensitivity and the skilful arrangement of its forms.

Taken from a long way out in the salt marsh on the western (or seaward) side of Pauatahanui Village, the little Anglican Church of St Alban’s - built in 1898 - nestles amongst a grove of trees over which sun-parched hills tower immediately east of the village....
Below is a poem written by New Zealand poet Sam Hunt...
PAUATAHANUI SONG
On the shell-bank this morning
I counted seven flights of
bird: the blue white-faced heron,
terns and shag and wild duck,
pied stilt, oyster-catchers and
an old man black-back, biggest
bird of all and the boldest.
On the shell-bank this morning
I watched as your small town woke,
the little Anglican church
pointing to God as if He
were some place else – the church has
got it wrong again! God lives
in Pauatahanui
and will do, long as you’re there.
On the shell-bank this morning
the old man black-back and I,
a couple of small-town toughs
cautiously eyeing each other.
I have no idea what he
plans to do today. For me,
I thought I might roam on up,
join God! Like see if you’re home.
On the shell-bank this morning,
our world afloat, your small town
beached at the top of the long tide,
and God not quite sure where He
should be, and me not knowing where
for sure you are, but wishing
you could join me and the birds
on the shell-bank this morning.

Judging from its pot belly, this guy sure having a very relax life with tons of food and no natural predator. He has adapted well to the local plant food. Even the boldest sizable python would be smart enough to avoid this unfamiliar, fearsome, spine-chilling alien-looking 4 footer thingy. It's a massive deception.
This foreigner started life probably in South America and brought here via the pet trade. He's now officially a PR here in sg after being abandon by its owner. Life is good but without a mate, life can be boring and uneventful. Looking at him is just like staring at a living dinosaur 65million years ago.
Talking about potbelly, this feature is also prevalent in human as well. The hypothesis lies in our evolutionary past. During the early stages of our species development , food is rather hard to come by. As such, whenever our ancestors had got a chance to eat eg from a successful hunt, they will eat as much as they could knowing the next meal would be a long way off or if it ever comes. The extra food ends up as fat surrounding the belly area. This 'extra' food would then keep our vital organs in functional status when they have nothing to eat at all. In other words keeping us alive when there isn't enough to go around during bad times.
Of course in today's context, most people won't need this feature at all let alone for survival. McDonald's is everywhere. (in fact McDonald is a major attribute to the unpleasant feature) Since it's encoded in our DNA for millions of years already, it's here to stay whether one likes it or not. Ironically, it has turned into a symbol of wealth. The richer a nation, the more pot bellies it has.

Living in a landlocked country, it had been a while since I last walked along a seashore. Seeing the plastic debris floating ashore - everything from a plastic flower pot to this toothbrush and lots of indistinguishable debris - hit me in a still different way than the many different documentaries on the topic that I have seen.
For the perhaps boldest attempt to date to clean the oceans of plastic waste (still dealing with technical issues) see www.theoceancleanup.com/
In the meantime, while lots of people are trying to figure out what to do with the waste that has already reached the oceans and is breaking down, we all need to review our use of plastic and reduce it to a minimum. For most things we buy there are other alternatives. I will never go plastic-free as long as cameras contain plastic, but it is in my power as a consumer - and yours, too - to avoid buying products containing plastic whenever possible, and to complain to producers when something I buy is unnecessarily packed in plastic. Better still to avoid unnecessary consumption overall.
Explore 2019-04-28, highest spotted: #72, ended up at #83. Thanks for all the views, faves and comments this toothbrush got. If someone out there actually reduces their consumption of plastic, then uploading this was worthwhile.
The temples (this one is Ta Prohm) around Angkor Wat in Cambodia are absolutely fascinating. Very old stones - huge, heavy and most intricately carved. But grown over by moss, plants and sometimes mighty trees with big roots. Actually, the roots are the most fascinating aspect. Showing impressively how nature swallows even the boldest of human traces. Just give it time...

When I visited Dublin a couple of months ago, I was particularly impressed with some real bold colors here and there, around this lovely city... Some of them were clearly Greek inspired!!! Just to underline how fundamentally true is the notion prevailing in Greece that Greeks and Irish are quite identical as peoples!..
Do you hear me, Fish?
Do you, Steve H?

In the fractured world of the Shattersea, where gravity bends unpredictably, rogue AI roam like predators, and nature has evolved beyond human understanding, only the boldest dare to cross the void between the isolated Bastions—the last remnants of human civilization.
These daring couriers are known as Drift Runners, specialists in high-risk, high-speed cargo runs across the chaotic wilderness. Their heavily modified land-based rigs utilize gravity catapult technology, allowing them to “jump” vast distances by harnessing the gravitational anomalies left behind by the Shatterwake, the cataclysmic event that shattered reality centuries ago.
Most who try don’t survive long. Those who do? They become legends.
One such crew has built a reputation for taking the jobs no one else will and laughing in the face of impossible odds. They pilot The Last Laugh, a battle-scarred, high-speed Drift Rig, tearing across the Shattersea with customized weapons, jerry-rigged tech, and sheer nerve.
⸻
The Crew:
Cerys “Echo” Callahan – The Captain
Role: Leader, Strategist, Sharpshooter
Description: A hardened survivor with sharp instincts and sharper aim, Echo is a tactical genius who always seems one step ahead of the chaos. Her helmet is often tossed aside in favour of headphones blaring synthwave. She values loyalty above all else—because she’s lost a crew before.
⸻
Arun “Grit” Pradchaphet – The Driver
Role: Pilot, Daredevil, Crew Protector
Description: If it has wheels, Grit can make it dance. An adrenaline junkie to the core, he pushes The Last Laugh past the limits of sanity while keeping his crew safe. For him, the crew is family, and he’ll drive through hell to keep them alive.
⸻
DX-7 “Dex” – The Navigator
Role: Route Planner, Data Analyst, Walking Encyclopedia
Description: Once part of a forgotten Bastion’s navigation AI, Dex now roams the Shattersea freely. Fiercely protective of animals, eerily good at predicting anomalies, and surprisingly witty, Dex has become the heart of the crew.
⸻
Omotola “Tola” Okafor – The Engineer
Role: Mechanic, Weapons Expert, Problem-Solver
Description: A Nigerian salvager, Tola can fix anything, usually while yelling at the others for breaking it in the first place. Resourceful, hot-headed, and mistrustful of outsiders, she treats The Last Laugh like a living thing—because, in this world, machines need just as much care as people.
⸻
The World of the Shattersea
A few centuries ago, the Shatterwake broke the world. No one remembers exactly what went wrong—only that physics collapsed, gravity fractured, and reality itself became unstable.
What remains of humanity is scattered across powerful city-states called Bastions, each built around a unique environment. Between them lies the Shattersea—a lawless wasteland where gravity wells shift unpredictably; rogue AI, known as Protocols, hunt and scavenge like wild animals; nature has adapted into something far more aggressive and unrecognizable.
The Drift Runners are the only ones who can navigate this chaos, using Drift Rigs equipped with Grav-Anchor Systems (G.A.S.) to slingshot themselves across vast distances. But even they aren’t safe.
The crew of The Last Laugh doesn’t take safe jobs. They take the impossible ones.
Whether it’s running cargo past rogue AI swarms, stealing data from a rival Bastion, or salvaging lost technology from the depths of the Shattersea, they always pull it off with style, skill, and just a little bit of madness.
And if they don’t? Well… at least they’ll go out laughing.

====================
My love for early XX Century Graflex SLRs is total. They are truly an icon of the boldest photojournalism of the 10s and 20s and 30s and their operation (and sound) and appearance make them unique. There are also other large-format reflexes that are just as spectacular, but unlike Graflex, it is difficult to find a way to use them (lack of holders or magazines, above all).
This is the smallest of all, the Auto Graflex Junior, in 2 1/4 x 3 1/4 format (almost equal to 6x9 cm), and surprisingly small, for being from this family. In fact, it can be said that the concept is quite similar to the future Hasselblad, as apart from plates you can use film, originally quite large, but there are also adapters to the usual 120.
This specific camera dates from the period 1914-1924, mounts a Taylor-Hobson Cooke Series II f4.5 lens, the best in the catalog. Even more interesting is the golden text with the name of the first owner: J. W. WATERER.
This "junior" model is not RB (revolving back), so you can only take horizontal photos. This is a disadvantage for portraits, but it does make the camera more compact. The other problem is that the Rollex or Rada film backs do not fit in, because the shutter forms a bend in the back that prevents them from being mounted. Therefore, only old and specific backs can be used, such as the one that was mounted specifically on this camera (Riteway brand), or the Graflex backs themselves, for 150/50 format film, but now using 120 film with adapters. Here you can see the Graflex back mounted.

► █░▓ LAST SUMMER I payed a visit to my watchmaker. After almost four years I was looking forward to se him and replace a battery in my watch. A young woman, which happened to be his daughter in law, stood behind the counter. She said that he had passed away. I was struck. He was a relatively young and good, healthy looking man. A real gentleman, like all watchmakers used to be in old Belgrade.
—She took my condolences and kindly let me take a picture of this old watch in the drawer while I was still confused with what I'd just heard.
This old Eterna watch plays kind of a symbolic roll in my memory. We've been using other devices to read time for a while already. In this electronic day and age not just the watchmakers pass away, as they always have; their craft is dying too. Along with a superb craft of designing and making beautiful watches like this one. Let anyone show me any modern watch design that can distantly match this one.
The time has stopped for the watchmaker and his favorite timepiece; the eternity has obviously opened up. But note that the pointer hasn’t reached ETERNA, and that both the pointers are slightly bent and have a broken part. Even the time – for us humans the boldest, the least malleable and the most insurmountable of all dimensions – has to stop at the gate of eternity.
We will never be truly able to understand eternal life from the perspective of this world. Yet, there are so many people who think that something they don’t fathom cannot be true or even doesn’t exist, just because they cannot grasp it.

"Bengaluru played a key role in the Great Trigonometrical Survey of India (GTS), serving as the starting point for measuring the Indian subcontinent's map. A baseline, a crucial component of triangulation surveys, was established near Bengaluru in 1800, marking the beginning of the project that ultimately led to the determination of Mount Everest's height. "
"What began as a small marker on the highest point of Bengaluru, 952 meters above sea level, turned into one of the boldest scientific missions of its time. The Great Trigonometric Survey of India, an initiative that started in the early 19th century, sought to measure the entire country with precision. The scientific team employed groundbreaking methods, including measuring a straight 11-kilometer line from Ram Murthy Nagar to Agara using chains, and later determining the altitude and azimuth with specialized instruments."

This industrious little fellow is the boldest of a very small flock of Song Sparrows (Melospiza melodia) that work the shadowed path just north of Raptor Tree Pond, Thomson Marsh, Kelowna, BC.
I'm pretty sure I've photographed him or one of his family/flock in previous months and years. They're here year-round.
This series is much too long/repetitive, I know. But, as I'm not seeing much in the Marsh this year,
and as in the low light that the camera took care of,
and as Charley let me get this close,
and as the clarity of the bird is pretty decent,
I decided to put up the whole bunch except one!
"I can make things in the water!" The boldest of the Chickadee babies shows his siblings what you can do with a calm sheet of water. I really believe these little ones have a sense of play. They sit on the rail and chatter to us when we're on the deck, and have started flying into the windchimes and richoceting off to the trees. If must be pretty daunting, weighing only a couple of grams and having to face that big, hard world. I like to think that ours have a little better chance to make it, starting as they do in a friendly environment.
My method is not unlike the raptor's. I cruise around town hitting my favorite hunting spots searching for likely captures. Conditions change and opportunities emerge. Due to a slowly eroding dam Bend's famous Mirror Pond is no longer. In its place is a frozen snowy wasteland between river and lawns. These wigeon were heisting themselves up on the icy bank waiting for the boldest among them to make the first move to the good grazing. When the exodus began I had my shooting gallery. Inevitable something would spook the whole flock back into the river. In no time they were lined up along the shore ready to repeat the process once again. a lunchtime run down to Mount Stewart and got this little lady within 20 mins and very little else. One of boldest squirrels I've seen for a while it sat 8 feet from me and munched away. Surprisingly there were next to no small birds about at the feeder site and they are normally needed to bring the squirrels in.
