When the Sultan unveiled the Blue Mosque, he was criticised for building six minarets, as at that time the Ka'aba in Mecca had six minarets also. So as not to be seen as competing with the most holy mosque in Islam, the sultan paid for a seventh minaret to be built in Mecca.
