This minaret along with another were added to make the Blue Minaret distinct from others that 1, 2 or 4. I think the Sultan was angry that the Blue Mosque did not surpass Aya Sofya in grandeur.

Istanbul had beautiful parks between the Blue Mosque and the Ayasofya

The Blue Mosque and Aya Sofya are the two mosques Istanbul's most well known for - no visit is complete without seeing both of them. But they're very different. This one doesn't have the same sense of grand space that Aya Sofya has (which predates it by over 1000 years), but oh, the tiles. How I love the tiles.
