Macro Mondays -- Medical

Some studies have found that hibiscus tea may lower systolic and diastolic blood pressure. However, to prevent an interaction, it should not be taken in combination with blood pressure medications.

Animal studies have found that hibiscus extract has antioxidant properties. Additional studies are needed to determine how this may translate to humans.

Some studies have shown that hibiscus tea may reduce blood cholesterol and triglyceride levels in those with diabetes and metabolic syndrome. However, other studies have produced conflicting results. More research is needed in the general population

Dark chocolate (high in cocoa content, i.e., 70% cocoa or more) has antioxidant properties. It contains polyphenols, flavanols and catechins. It MAY have a beneficial impact on cardiovascular and neurological disease-causing factors if it behaves in the body as in the lab. IT ALSO TASTES REALLY GOOD!! Image less than 2 1/2 inches.

Today on our Princeton Animal Hospital social media sites, I posted photos of Chloe, an almost 14 year old Dachshund, having her blood pressure taken. One of the most important things about getting a blood pressure in a cat or dog is trying to keep them relaxed. You can see Steven snuggling with Chloe before he lays her on her side.

The birds are quiet, only one or two are left flying around. Frogs begin their nightly conversations. The only other sound is the intermittent splash of a beaver diving and resurfacing behind us. Just a few minutes ago, in a clearing in the bullrushes right in front us, a deer took a drink of water.

Opened 1979. In the last year, the 'Big' part of the front sign was taken down, leaving just the old Kmart logo by itself.

This store also has one of these old health monitor centers as well, although the old logo is pretty faded on this one. It was located just to the right of the pharmacy box.

In support of the Blood Pressure Regulation (BP Reg) investigation, Expedition 35 Commander Chris Hadfield completes the setup of the Human Research Facility Pulmonary Function System and the European Physiology Module Cardiolab Leg/Arm Cuff System, and conducts the first-ever session of this study. The experiment is testing a simple in-flight method to predict which crew members are at greatest risk of fainting after returning to Earth. This test may in the future help to identify the astronauts who could benefit from countermeasures before returning to Earth. This method has great potential for astronaut health monitoring during future long-term spaceflights, and it has important implications for testing individuals on Earth, especially the elderly, who are at risk for fainting. The research also will demonstrate in space the feasibility of obtaining a set cardiovascular regulation indicators from the non-invasive measurement of continuous blood pressure. (NASA)

High blood pressure, also called hypertension, usually has no symptoms.

But it can cause serious problems such as stroke, heart failure, heart attack and kidney failure.

If you cannot control your high blood pressure through lifestyle changes such as losing weight and reducing sodium in your diet, you may need medicines.

Blood pressure medicines work in different ways to lower blood pressure. Some remove extra fluid and salt from the body. Others slow down the heartbeat or relax and widen blood vessels. Often, two or more medicines work better than one.

What are some common medicines to treat high blood pressure?

Alpha blockers,Alpha-beta blockers,Angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors,Angiotensin II receptor blockers,Beta blockers,

Calcium channel blockers,Centrally acting,Direct vasodilators,Diuretics (water pills),Renin inhibitors
