This mural was a project between the Sterling School 5th grade class, the Blank Canvas Mural Company and SmartArts. It was painted on the side of a moving container and can be seen from the Sliding Rock Creek greenway trail.

This is more practice at people/gig photography, again, i wish i'd taken my 20D and f1.4 50mm lens, as much as i really love my (older and much less bulky) Minolta Dimage A2, it's not a patch on the 20D when it comes to dealing with low-light at low ISO's (this is at the lowest ISO setting of 800, and is a lot more grainey than i'd like. With hind sight i'd have gone for a higher ISO and tried even harder to keep still).
These are my first real attempt at gig photograhpy, and i've learnt loads through trial and error, observation etc. The indoors ones like this were a lot harder than outdoors at the main stage - for a start i had to keep stiller due to the lower light, but also due to there being more flashing lights/stage smoke the timing is a lot more important - as well as trying to predict when someone's going to have their mouth open and showing some form of emotion my paying close attention to the song, you also need to account for timing of the lights....
One tip i've come to the conculsion of (with hind-sight unfortunately for most of the shots), is to focus first (on the end of the microphone is easiest as it's not moving), then switch to manual - if you're using auto-focus by part-depressing the capture button, the light will be metered at that point, and you've then got the problem of timing the capture to the same level of light - much easier to focus first, then take photos in manual mode so you dont have to pause between focusing (and reading white-balance) and taking the photo. All seems so obvious with hind-sight :-)

Locating your space:
"I live in a 4 season Canadian climate and have a long winter which sometimes does not allow shaded areas to grow grass. This area (inset picture) is in a private secluded corner of my backyard and with a budget of $60, some physical effort and a little imagination this dead space can become an extension of my outdoor living area for many years to come."
