The Anping District is known for its sword-lions, the face of a lion biting on a sword (or two) , placed over or next to a doorway to a house. According to legend, these were originally placed by Zheng Chengong's veterans when they settled in the area. Originally their military shield, all marked with a lion's head, were hung over the doorway, as well their swords, and so passer-bys would see what looked like the lion biting on the swords. Gradually these became protective talismans, and also a symbol of family status and an address. They were all personally made, and so run a gamut of brick, plaster or tiles, each with a unique design. Originally most of the houses had these sword-lions, but only about 30 odd originals remain.

I noticed these wasps hovering around dusty, arid farmland in Tenerife with their legs dangling below them. They were acutely aware of my presence and fled whenever I approached, so I had to patiently wait for them to approach. When startled by my movements, they darted away about a foot, buried themselves into the dirt, and lifted their legs into the air - as seen here! I think they were attempting to play dead to deter me from predating on them!
