After a bit of a wait for traffic ahead - and for the dispatcher to finally answer the radio so they could get a new warrant - the CP 6241 and CP 6306 are finally moving down the mainline near the north end of the siding at Harpers Ferry, Iowa. The BAL-05 with it's two sets of GREX belt cars are loaded with rock from the Waterloo, Wisconsin pit on the WSOR. The north end of Harper's Ferry is adjacent to a sand pit currently owned by northeast Iowa contractor Skyline Materials/Bruening Rock Products. The Mississippi River Valley in this part of the world has quite a few quarries and sand pits, thanks to the sandy deposits at the bottom of the bluffs and the limestone and other harder rocks that make up the bluffs and make for good building materials.
The train is passing the head end of a 377 hopper train that has been stuck in the siding for a bit while waiting for three trains to pass - and there were two more trains down at Marquette meeting as well headed for the Mason City sub. It's been busy times on the modern CPKC lines along the west edge of the Mississippi River Valley, and this ballast is being moved to support more of the expansion and upgrade efforts.
A bit of a miracle getting so close to this species as they are extremely shy and wary. Normally they spot you and hide. However, on passage migration they appear to be much more confiding. They are usually found on desolate moorland and mountain sides but on passage migration they have been recorded on the coast and even in peoples gardens. They will stay if you have berries!

Slightly smaller and slimmer than a blackbird - male ring ouzels are particularly distinctive with their black plumage with a pale wing panel and striking white breast band. The ring ouzel is primarily a bird of the uplands, where it breeds mainly in steep sided valleys, crags and gullies, from near sea level in the far north of Scotland up to 1,200m in the Cairngorms.
Breeding begins in mid-April and continues through to mid-July, with two broods common, and nests are located on or close to the ground in vegetation (typically in heather), in a crevice, or rarely in a tree. The young are fed a diet consisting mainly of earthworms and beetles.

Where to see them
Ring ouzels can be found in upland areas of Scotland, northern England, north west Wales and Dartmoor. When on spring and autumn migration they may be seen away from their breeding areas, often on the east and south coasts of the UK where they favour short grassy areas.
When to see them
Ring ouzels arrive in March and April and leave again in September.

The first national survey in 1999 estimated the UK ring ouzel population at 6,157-7,549 pairs, with further range contractions and a likely 58 per cent decline in population size since 1988-91.
Recent studies aimed at understanding these declines suggest that low first-year, and possibly adult, survival may be the main demographic mechanisms driving the population decline. The large population decline qualifies the ring ouzel for inclusion on the red list of birds of conservation concern.

'thruppenny bits' are 12 sided nickel-brass coins used in Britain from 1937 until 31 August 1971 when they ceased to be legal tender. During that period they were worth 3 pence of the 240 pence that made up £1.
I stood a row of 9 coins on a mirror - all these date within the reign of our present Queen, whilst the other laid flat is older from the time of George VI - this has a representation of thrift. The coins are about 22-24mm in diameter depending where you measure them - they aren't round!

It was a setup in a museum and the LED light was a bit weak for my 100 ISO film, but I tried anyway.
Taken with Olympus 24 SP and Ilford Delta 100 developed in Fomadon R09 1:50. A positive was made on Fomaspeed paper.
I reckon this shot is a bit too late for the movie - Transformer. I didn't even realise this shot is in my archives... that's what happen when one has too much crap in his harddrive :P Anyway, its still better late than never! Sorry its a post & run this morning as its way past midnight here & I'm going to transform myself into a sleeping log now. Should see you shortly soon! ciao!

These are bits from a tiny screwdriver set used for working on electronics. That makes this photo a macro, as well.
I was a bit in a hurry since the light was fading very quickly and i was quite far away from the car. Everything was already in my backpack and I promised to myself "no more photography for today".
Then i see this beautiful scene in front of me and i had to take everything out. Again.
I have no regrets 😜

Been away a bit.
Baffled how it happened but the Monday after Christmas began coughing. Started as a tickle. Then turned croup like. Was able to get to urgent care that Thursday and a rapid test was positive for covid.
Because of my recent cancers I qualified for the myoclonal antibody treatment. Felt remarkably better for a bit.
But this sure has been a roller coaster.
I feel so bad for the unvaccinated. If I've been this awful after three Pfizers, I can't imagine surviving without having been vaxxed.
I had been given Prednisone for the croup/bronchial inflammation which I didn't start taking until I lost the sense of smell. Surprisingly the sense came back after two days.
A week after I showed symptoms, Kim showed, but hers were very different. She had severe nausea and headache. She hasn't had the respiratory involvement, but her test this past week was also positive. She's on the recovery roller coaster too.
Sometimes we feel some better, then it all hits again.
Been using our large gym ball to lie over. Way back at the beginning of the pandemic a bunch of us who had been Physical Therapists had talked about the importance of lying prone and the importance of postural drainage, which we used to do for patients in the hospital before Respiratory Therapy took it over.
Lying on one's chest on the ball supports the diaphragm and makes coughing more comfortable. Pushing forward to get the head low and butt high will help get secretions moving and excreted. Plus rolling on the ball is very good for the back.
I suppose my involvement here at Flickr will be a bit spotty for awhile yet. Hope everyone stays well.
This has been baffling. We've been masked whenever we've left the house. Kim goes to work but since she showed symptoms after me, I'm the likely one to have given it to her. In the week before showing symptoms I'd been once to the grocery store. And I've always double masked. I've always brought along my alcohol spray bottle to spray down the shopping carts.
One thing we haven't kept up is the wiping down of the grocery items before bringing them into the house. And we haven't been wiping down the Amazon packages that get delivered. But that method of transference has always been very low on the list. Being unmasked in a closed space has always been the chief method of transmission.
Go figure.
I don't know what these beauties are, but they are all over the countryside like little bits of sunshine. So cheerful.

A bit south of Carmel-By-The-Sea along the California coast is a tiny valley covered in lily flowers in late winter and early spring. We went there for sunset. A small creek flows into the Pacific Ocean, forming ever changing tiny valleys and hills with ripples. I froze the action with a very short exposure time.
I processed a balanced and a photographic HDR photo from a RAW exposure, blended them selectively, and carefully adjusted the color balance and curves. I welcome and appreciate constructive comments.

The physical dimensions of the brass threepence remained the same in the reign of Queen Elizabeth II.
The effigy of the queen produced by Mary Gillick was used, with the inscription ELIZABETH II DEI GRA BRITT OMN REGINA F D used in 1953, and ELIZABETH II DEI GRATIA REGINA F D used in all other years.
The reverse shows a Tudor portcullis with chains and a coronet, with the inscription THREE PENCE date.
This coin was produced in all years from 1953 to 1967, and in 1970 (in proof sets only).
Following decimalisation, the brass threepence ceased to be legal tender after 31 August 1971.
