Gee Ma, he pushed me first!

A little blurry but what can ya do. As we drove away I said, "Bye, son!" Because I'm funny.

When the chips are down and I'm feeling low, I can always look to the animal kingdom for an infusion of joy. Whether it's my dogs, or a young bison drinking peacefully from a pond, they have a way of making me feel better about my lot in life. It's the simple things.

A couple of bison I encountered earlier this month (3-6-2022) at the south unit of Theodore Roosevelt National Park near Medora, North Dakota. Of all the wildlife within the park boundaries (including the occasional cougar, plus plenty of coyotes and even prairie rattlers in the warm months), bison are the ones I am most wary of while hiking about. These were both bedded down and appeared slow and cumbersome when they stood but they are anything but slow. On this particular day, I was not feeling well and did not stray far from my vehicle and these particular frames were shot from within, in fact. Pleaaaase... Don't go pose with bison! If ever you witness their speed and agility during the rut, for example, you'll realize you don't stand a chance outrunning one of these big animals, for they make the worst bull in a rodeo look mild by comparison. They climb well (I've seen tracks up hillsides like that in the background) and they will also cave in a fender on your vehicle if you try to drive through a herd when they are in the road (I watched it happen in the north unit of TRNP one day a few years ago). If you act like the idiot in the YouTube video and harrass them, Darwin has an eye on you...

When you visit the National Bison Range in Montana, plan on plenty of opportunities to photograph these magnificent animals.

Bison bison -- mother & calf

Our passage through Custer State Park in the South Dakota Black Hills was halted by this bison herd. It's believed that most bison in the US today are not pure bred. In the late 1800's to early 1900's the species was hunted almost to extinction. The remaining remnant was cross bred with domesticated cattle in attempts to tame the unruly beasts. It was abandoned - impossible to tame. Unfortunately even this free ranging wild herd is not genetically pure.

A ranger told us the Bison rut was over. Apparently these two did not get the notice.

One cannot drive the Wildlife Loop without checking on the beasts! It's hard to imagine that thousands once roamed the western plains for aeons virtually undisturbed!

Out in Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve they have a herd of bison. This male was idle with his eyes closed looking to get some relief from the flies.

The Bison herd was out and I was able to get closer today. They just looked at me, didn't have anything to say about me being there.

The Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge is usually a reliable place to see bison. But sometimes the landscape is empty and you wonder where they are. This was not one of those days. Our beautiful world, pass it on.

The Bison was an amphibious vehicle, optimised for traversing the tundra of Hibernia. Similar to Siberia, on Earth, the land could be frozen and snowy in the winter and then melt into swampland in the summer.

The design was based on the LVT Buffalo of WWII vintage. A big difference was that the Bison's ramp was front loading, whereas the Buffalo had a rear loading ramp. The Bison also featured extra plumbing, to enable hand washing, which was impossible in the old Buffalo design.

The cargo space was just large enough to hold one, half-sized standard Hibernia container or a small vehicle.

This herd was on the march to join a larger herd. It's late summer and breeding season. The bison gather into large herds. Our beautiful world, pass it on.
