Rundale Palace is one of the most remarkable examples of baroque and rococo architecture in Latvia. Situated in Pilsrundale, its foundations were laid in 1736 on the spot of an ancient Livonian castle mentioned in chronicles as far back as 1555.

It was planned and built as a summer residence for the Duke of Courland Ernst Johann von Biron by the Russian architect of Italian origin,

Francesco Bartolomeo Rastrelli. Construction work began in 1736 and was completed in 1768, with the architectural ensemble including household buildings and a park.

A museum was opened to the public in 1972, and restoration works have been taking place in order to restore its historic character and return the structure to its original condition.

The park at Rundale offers a delicate sample of the French garden in baroque style and is the most attractive of its kind in the Baltic region.

Each summer, a festival of celebration takes place at the park with locals and visitors, and at this event on the 13th August 2011 the works of the artists were displayed in one of the park alleys.

The sculptures were installed on specially designed bases created by masters of the metalworking and wood engraving arts. These decorative carvings were shaped in accordance with original baroque techniques and style. During the event, visitors had an opportunity to learn more about the project from the distributed booklets and posters that were prepared with stylish graphic calligraphy.

The sculptures were arranged within the space of its location to create distinctive compositions framed by the magical atmosphere of the architecture and the special treatment of the chiaroscuro to match the images with the deep meanings of the sculptures and emphasize the visual power of the material.

The 12 pictures taken during the photo session are placed in calendar - one image for each month.

For this project I looked at the biometric proportions of people's faces as well as features that represent identity (e.g eye colour and fingerprints). Then, by using a combination of drawing, photo collaging and printing I made a piece. This piece was then photocopied onto acetate before taking it to the darkroom and making photograms of my work using light sensitive paper and an enlarger. This inspired me to go on to create my final Pineal Gland piece at the end of the year.

I googled this gadget and found some interesting articles, like this one, whose author protested on religious grounds. They told us it's not a fingerprint scanner, but rather something that records hand geometry. Bruce Schneier concurs.

Hand geometry biometrics link.

They also said it would be a lot faster than checking photo IDs. It took 6-7 tries to get a read, but I could get my ID out of my wallet in about 2 seconds. So, like self-check-out at Home Depot, new tech isn't necessarily better or more efficient for the consumer. So there must be other reasons to use it. I wonder what they are.

Sunglasses have infrared sensor/receiver. Finger hold has galvanic skin response sensor and heart rate sensor. All cased within a sexy black box!

The prospect of getting a new freelancing assignment required the taking of a fresh batch of portrait photos.

Despite the machine confirming the compliance of this portrait with the guidelines for biometric passport photos (note the green dot at the lower left), I personally doubt that it will be accepted by the Italian consulate once I get around to requesting my new passport.

My facial expression is easily explained: Once you have positioned yourself properly in the booth, two rows of additional lamps suddenly light up on either side, glaring very brightly directly into your face. Knowing that the picture would result spoiled by grimacing, you try to resist the urge to squint.

This is when the picture is taken.

The reflection of the two vertical rows of lights on your eyeballs makes the irises appear narrow-slitted, like those of reptiles.

And that smirk that I managed to smuggle through the biometric compliance test is bound to warrant some interesting conversations at the passport checkpoints.

Oh, and what about the top of my head being clipped?

We shall see if I can get a new passport with this portrait.

I will keep you posted on the matter.
