Some people see plant biotechnology as a way to produce more food with fewer pesticides. Others believe solving world hunger is just a smokescreen for biotechnology companies wanting to get rich. A study headed by JoAnn Beckwith, MAES resource development researcher, found a wide range of opinions and concerns among members of six focus groups. These focus groups — farmers and agribusiness people, senior citizens, researchers in plant biotechnology, local environmental group members, MSU students and graduate students in resource development — discussed various plant biotechnology topics. Beckwith’s objective was to gain a greater understanding of how individuals view the acceptability of plant biotechnology and genetically engineered foods.
