The other day I was in a conversation with my old man and younger brother. We were discussing the sorry state of affairs with the Michigan economy and the prospects for things getting better. Between the two of them they worked on the line at Ford for over 50 years, with my Dad spending over 40 years at Wixom assembly and my brother with 10 years at Dearborn truck. Both are 'retired', my Dad retired about 12 years ago while my brother took his buy out in 2007 and is working in health care and well along to becoming a nurse. Both seemed to take the view that it will be a long time before the state returns to any semblance of prosperity. I tend to agree.

My brother is still in contact with a few buddies who decided to stay at the plant. Most are grateful they still have a job but all talked at length about how the job has changed. The demands of the job are greater and the work and income are less stable. Now when they get laid off they no longer get "sub pay" which cushioned their earnings while unemployed. My Dad mentioned that it sounds like the job is very much like it was back in the 60's. The pay was good, not great, and he often went through long stretches of week on and week off employment. This created a strain for a man raising a growing family. Dad's answer to this situation was to take another job working in construction. That ultimately led to opening a small side business. As the union gathered more power and the Big 3 continued to mint money, the pay and working conditions improved. Add in the income from the side business and he was able to provide for his 5 children in a manner his father could not.

That was then.

Today the men and women on the line are dealing with pay and working condition much as they did 40 to 50 years ago. There are several critical differences today making matters worse. Back in the 60's and 70's the slow periods were always viewed as temporary. Everyone thought, rightly I might add, they will be called back once folks start buying cars again. Another key difference is the health of the companies themselves. Back then a strike was a powerful weapon, with little competition, the Big 3 were intent on keeping the lines running, even in slow times, and they had the means to offer generous terms to keep the lines running. Not any more. A general strike at Chrysler will find the company kicked to the curb in a liquidation. GM and Ford are just as fragile. This all leads to the biggest change we have seen in Detroit; today a young person getting out of high school no longer looks to working on the line as an option over continued education. What was once a great job is no longer great.

We have gone though many of the stages of grief in Michigan, it is time we accept that the great money machine has seized up and is basically totaled. Time to move on. We need to capitalize on our assets, of which there are many, and set about building new businesses.

I photographed this 1962 Plymouth Valiant at a local muffler shop while on the way to my friend Dan's house to play cards on a Friday night.

What amazed me was the completeness of this car, while in such horrible, horrible shape. It's almost like it had been sitting in a barn that was missing half its roof.

I hope this car has since been restored. (This muffler shop has since closed at this location.)

A lonely Detroiter walks down the street. Abandoned. Abandoned by the industry that provided his Grandfather with a passport to the middle class. Left stateless by Government whose very action of abandonment was charged by Political hacks in states whose very wealth was built on the backs and imaginations of generations of Detroiters. Can you imagine a modern Atlanta or Dallas without the automobile? Would the great westward migration have happened if recent generations were tied to wagon trains? They would have stopped at the Divide and Los Angeles would still be a backwater port and desert if not for the car.

What is most troubling about the current dialogue is how working men and women have been painted as the bad guys- too often portrayed as greedy slackers intent on using union goons and stooges to grease skids for their life of leisure. How did this happen? Merrill Lynch executives push through billions of dollars in bonuses before taking their snouts to lap up at the TARP through. The AVERAGE pay at Goldman Saks is north of $600,000 and there they are in line to get a bailout check. Being a shameless bunch, you can catch their hacks on the business news channels prattling on about how Detroit needs to get its act together and cut wages of those grossly overpaid shop rats.

Never mind that the current crisis is directly a result of the nincompoopery in the executive suites and boardrooms of the banks. These alchemists in their Harvard wizard hats sold the idea of turning sub- prime loans into gold. All the while they pocketed billions in compensation and when their loans were found out to be fools gold, they had the balls to say, “Oops! Can we a get check from the tax payers to cover our loses?” And here they are wagging their boney fingers at our neighbors, accusing them of being out of step, overpaid and, well, stupid.

1977

Road Runner used to mean muscle, but by 1979 it was just a trim package for the Plymouth Volaré. There were some suspension tweaks made, but the engine options available were not exactly exciting. The styling wasn’t the best either – with window louvers and flamboyant stripes..
