When asked how long she has been at the hostel, Shiv Kumari gives a precise response of "7 years and 4 months on the 24th of this month." Shiv Kumari elaborates how much she had suffered before coming to the hostel, and how fortunate she feels to be able to live without fear and study in a safe environment.

Shiv Kumari's parents passed away before she turned 5. Her two older sisters were already working as Kamalari in Kathmandu, and her older brother had run away from home, and is still missing to this day. She went on to live with her aunt, who forbade her from going to school saying "there is no point in educating someone else's child" and made her do strenuous tasks for her age. She was verbally abused, physically assaulted, and given death threats if she was not able to complete her tasks.

Shiv Kumari was rescued after working at her aunt's for 2 years, after a well-wisher from her village attracted SWAN's attention to her plight. Currently studying at grade 9, Shiv Kumari extols the importance of education and aspires to be a doctor.

11 year old Khima Chaudhary started working as a Kamalari at the age of 9 in Butwal, where she used to cut grass, cook food, clean dishes and clothes, among other household chores. After her father died, the financial situation at her home worsened with just her mother and 4 younger siblings, which compelled Khima's mother to send her off as a Kamalari.

Khima has been at Lawa Juni for almost 2 years now. Currently studying in grade 5, Khima wants to be a policewoman in order to "help Nepal, and catch people who do bad things and put them in jail."

Renu mentions that she was not rescued like the other girls, but was made aware of the hostel, by other ex-kamalaris from the hostel, when she returned home during one of her visits from work. She was sent off as Kamalari when she was 8 years old; sold off with the promise of educating her and providing Rs.5000 (USD 51) to her parents, both of which was a lie.

Currently she studies in class 6. She emphasizes that the hostel has been a godsend as she was not able to go to school even when she was at home. The only problem that she faces is the somewhat untimely delivery of the monthly allowance promised by the government. The girls at the hostel use the Rs.500 (USD 5.1) monthly allowance, provided 10 months out of 12 to all the residents, to buy clothes and other essentials. Even though the allowance is not a lot, that too seems to be not distributed on time to everyone at the hostel.

Anjana has been at the hostel for the last 7 years. She worked for a year at a house in Bhairawa when she was 10 years old.

"Nowadays I do not have to work, and am able to focus on studies. After coming here, what I have been wishing have been coming true so I am really happy to be here"

16 year old Sunita has been at Lawa Juni for 4 years. She recalls at first she did not want "to be rescued" as she did not know about the hostel, but now she is glad that she made it here. It was not easy to get here to the hostel as one social mobilizer from SWAN and four members of a local Girl's Group had to restrain her on their 2 hour long trip from her work to hostel 4 years ago.

14 year old Junu Shrestha lived with her grandmother. Due to the family's inability to send her to school after grade 3, she was sent off to work at a house in Ghorahi for 4 years. She was rescued on February 21, 2013 and has been staying at Lawa Juni since then.

Ram Kumari is 21 years old and currently attends grade 9. She has been living in Lawa Juni since March 11, 2008, 3 days after the then 25 student hostel was officially inaugrated. Before that she had been working as a Kamalari for 10 years, starting work when she was just 6 years old.

Ram Kumari mentions that " SWAN has helped a lot. Because of their rescue efforts we do not have to live our lives as slaves. If it were not for SWAN, we would still be living our lives in darkness."

Ram Kumari recalls that she worked in a lot of different houses, and the work she did comrpised of cleaning entire houses everyday to operating small rice mills. She was made to work even when she was sick. The majority of her 10 year life as a Kamalari she worked at a teacher's house in Tulsipur, and ironically she was not allowed to study. The teacher used to make her walk an hour every day to clean/paint one of the houses he owned; that house is now part of a school in Tulsipur.

17 year old Gayatri studies in grade 9 and has been at Lawa Juni hostel for the last 6 years.

"I was not allowed to go to school while I worked. I really wanted to study, and now I am able to do that. If it were not for SWAN, I probably would never have been able to study."

9 year old Anita started to work from the age of 5 in her own village. She worked for a year before social mobilizers from SWAN convinced her parents to send her to Lawa Juni so that she did not have to work and could get a proper uninterrupted education.

Her sister, Sunita Chaudhary, is also living in Lawa Juni.

Updated an older picture that was made from lots of free images produced by much better artists than myself. Thought I'd try dumping all my fears about the future (which include some of the potential pitfalls of evolving technologies) into a single picture. ;) It's kinda neat to see sci-fi series like "Altered Carbon" exploring these sorts of things....

The Lion represents Jesus Christ.

There is a verse in the Bible (See 2 Thessalonians 2:4) which mentions the "lawless one" sitting in the temple of God and proclaiming himself to be God.

Well when Satan(the power behind the lawless one) is finally allowed to "sit on God's throne for a little while", I suspect it will be in part because he will be made to finally realize that the throne itself - without the one who truly loves us seated upon it(Jesus) - is but one more fancy chair.... ;)
