La Paz ist der Regierungssitz Boliviens (Hauptstadt: Sucre). Mit einer Höhe von 3200 bis 4100 m ist die Stadt der höchstgelegene Regierungssitz der Erde. Der Höhenunterschied zwischen den weiter talabwärts gelegenen südlichen Stadtteilen mit vielen Villen und dem Stadtrand am oberen Ende des Talkessels in El Alto beträgt knapp 1000 m, was bei der Abfahrt von El Alto hinunter nach La Paz zu sehr spektakulären Ausblicken führt. Die Wohnviertel weisen eine deutliche Übereinstimmung zwischen Höhenlage und sozialem Status auf: je höher die Lage, desto ärmer die Bewohner und umgekehrt. Von 11 Millionen Einwohner Boliviens leben über 2 Millionen in La Paz / El Alto.

Im Hintergrund rechts der Illimani, der "Hausberg" von La Paz: Seine drei Gipfel überragen 6430 meter.
