The Saturday challenge for 21 August was anything created to be sat upon, such as chairs, sofas, benches, etc. There were plenty of possibilities for me, from simple ‘uprights and a plank’ benches in the park to upholstered armchairs in the house, but I wanted to find something of wider appeal, and decided on ‘Mr Hubert’s Bench’. Neither Mrs D or I knew Mr Hubert but we’ve often sat on his bench; it’s beside a path overlooking the appropriately named Happy Valley, a ‘Site of Special Scientific Interest’ and part of the ‘South London Downs National Nature Reserve’, a recently created protected green space which forms an irregular arc within easy walking distance of our home. The bench is a fine place to take a break part way through a dog walk, and the sentiment on the plaque is shared by all the ramblers, joggers and dog walkers who know this spot. Here, against a backdrop of a general view of the valley, is a montage of images taken today of the bench itself, a close-up of the plaque, and to give you an idea of why Mr Hubert loved the place, the view from the bench with (of course) Lily drinking it in.

142 062 arrives at Plumley to collect a solitary pasenger. A charming station that still has a fine range of buildings, sadly not in railway use, and some interesting art work along with a rather old bench.

My first attempt at putting two images together in Elements.

Sarah was taken inside with a horrendously cluttered background, which I could do nothing about, so I thought that I would experiment with changing backgrounds for the first time.

There are still many things to learn/apply - eg feathering, blending, lighting, shadows etc, etc, etc, but for a first attempt, I am quite pleased with it.

WEEK 31 – Hernando Kroger

Looking out from the café into the great beyond, i.e. the bakery display tables and bread and lunchmeat areas. Cheese is in that funky-shaped case near the left center of the photo. I fully expect the Marketplace to have a Murray’s Cheese Shop. Frankly, I’m surprised the Southaven Monster Kroger (which most people are using as a benchmark of what the new store here will be like – I think a lot of them will be in for a surprise that it’s going to be even bigger and have more of a selection) doesn’t have a Murray’s.

These places are public so these photos are too, but just as I tell where they came from, I'd appreciate if you'd say who :)

This is a USGS benchmark. There are many thousands like it. I'm drawn to them because most have their typography damaged in some unique way.

A United States Dept. of the Interior, National Park Service benchmark at Marconi Station site. It looks like its center is filed out. I wonder why??

This is located just outside of the overlook at Marconi Beach. The beach is named for Guglielmo Marconi. His station on this site, in 1903 transmitted the first transatlantic wireless message. It was sent from here to Cornwall, UK.

The station itself is long gone, succumbing to the forces of nature. In 2014, a monument commemorating the event was dismantled, and important pieces moved inland before what remained of it was sucked under by the ever encroaching Atlantic.

The design goal for the half-frame Olympus Pen F SLR was to fit within the dimensions of a screw mount Leica.

A few years later, the full frame OM-1 went after the same benchmark, with a little flexibility in the rules. The overall height of the Leica IIIF matches the height to the top of the wind lever of the OM-1.
