Ti-Jos Mobile! Ne me demandez pas pourquoi...

The Pointe St-Charles switcher heads west light through the St-Henri neighbourhood of Montreal with a pair of GP9's (CN 7054 & CN 7228) about 80 minutes before sunset. Two crewmembers are on the front of the lead engine and both have beltpacks.

Continuing with 5379, we have my recalling on my first venture out to Sarnia since i moved into the area around November, with this encounter being in late December.

I made it home for the Christmas Break, and the day after getting home, i decided to head out to do some railfanning. 5379 was assigned to the Sarnia Beltpack, and was surprised that it was leading the job, so i decided to grab as many shots as possible of this rare unit in Southern Ontario.

Here we see CN's Sarnia Beltpack Job with SD40-2 5379 leading a string of tankers to the front of the highway bridge on a cloudy December afternoon. Still glad i caught this SD40-2 on this bridge, but sadly i stipped visiting the bridge due to the potenntial risk of CN Police.

Date Taken: December 18th, 2023

Subdivision: CN Strathroy Sub

Train ID: CN Sarnia Beltpack Job

Consist: CN 5379 (SD40-2), CN 4762 (GP38-2W)

CN YPC011 10 is waiting for the signal at the West end of the Victoria Bridge. After getting a "slow to stop" indication, the GP38-2 wide cab duo will shove back into the Butler Spur to go grab a gondola in the siding. Note that CN 4808 is beltpack-capable.

Snow flurries mixed with rain are in the air on this mid September morning as a pair of geeps take a pause in their switching duties. IC 3140 has been a resident of Edmonton Alberta for several years, with her most recent assignment being paired with a beltpack equipped GP38-2 for the 07:00 Biseell Switcher.

A GP9-slug-GP9 trio (CN 7038, CN 221 & CN 7250) is busy moving cars on a siding off of the Côte De Liesse spur. This line is usually switched at night, so it was nice to run into this movement which always runs as an extra.

The engineer/switchman backs the units onto the train after completing the run-around at Hazel on the former Placerville Branch. The other crew member road the units and got the east and west switches lined up for the move. After coupling up and climbing aboard the rest of the westbound leg was operated from the cab using conventional controls. It seems to be a lot of work for a two-person crew, but with good coordination and thoughtful moves, it all works out pretty smoothly, but it certainly takes some level of skill to make this all happen.

CN 2684 (the DPU on CN 308 which derailed in Plaster Rock, New Brunswick on Jan. 7th 2014) is heading to CAD (Canadian Allied Diesel) in Lachine, Quebec for much needed repairs. One crewmember is boarding the engine after flagging the crossing. They are operating the two GP9's (CN 4102 & CN 7017) which are pushing the train westwards via beltpack. Of note is that this spur which only serves one customer now (CAD) was once CN's main line to the west till a line relocation in 1960.

The crewmember on CN 7054 is controlling his train with the beltpack he is operating as it heads east through old Montreal, very busy at this time as it is lunch hour. Lucky for me! At right is grain elevator #5 and at left is Habitat 67.

Despite air quality warnings for the entire area thanks to an early fire season, the show must go on for the CP crew on the 15:15 Scotford switcher. The two man crew use an ex SOO SD60 and a beltpack equipped GP38 to shove a cut of empty tanks up the lead to the Shell refinery

The evening Sarnia beltpack switcher sits silently in the yard awaiting the next switch move.

Today, exposition day at the Quebec Model Railroad Society! What's best than a GP9RM beltpack as a demo for the public? Me and a couple of friends were responsible for the demonstration and since the engine had been running low idle the whole night before, we decided it needed a little clean up. Smoke! Not like an ALCO but still....

After the westbound was long gone on the Devil’s Lake Sub, we poked around the unmanned Amtrak station in Grand Forks. When we had seen all that we wanted, we headed into town and found the crew of BNSF 5963 requesting permission to make a reverse move in the yard to back onto a cut of tanks. We got in position as the clouds broke for yet another sunny take of the day as BNSF 5963 is first westbound out of the yard before heading south down the Hillsboro Sub. An SD40 works away as a beltpack yard job in the background as the clouds provide some solid storm light. As the southbound oil train worked its way south out of Grand Forks, we hopped on the Interstate and headed south of town. Jack knew of the small town of Thompson and suggested it for the grain elevator in town. The town of Thompson is very small, with a population of just over 1000 people per a recent survey. The sun decided to hide as 5963 could be heard north of us, and stayed hidden as the train came into view passing the Farmer's Co-Op elevator. This rounded out our productive day trip to the states, where memories were made by all three of us. Following the last set, we relaxed with some of the best pizza I've ever had at Rhombus Pizza in Grand Forks proper, another solid suggestion by Jack!

GP9's CN 7054 & CN 4139 are taking part in beltpack demonstrations available to those who attended CN family day at Joffre yard today. Another activity going on was speeder rides, with one at right. At left CN 309 doubles its train.

This is BNSF's newest hump trimmer at Argentine Tall Tower. Yep, an Ex-BN SD60M. There are 3 of them here now. From talking to crews they love them for the extra power. They can trim some big cuts with them and have a nice big air conditioned cab to sit in and a desk to put their feet up on while they're running from the beltpack.

Three trains are seen at Joffre during the CN family day. In the middle is CN 309 (making its double) and at far left is CN 120 stopped for a crew change, both revenue trains. At right is a decidedly non-revenue train, with CN 7054 & CN 4139 taking part in beltpack demonstrations.

Seems to be a common lashup for yard goats around Walker lately. Hearing quite a few beltpack equipped SD60s on the scanner around here lately. Seems to be a new number every time I'm up aroudn the yards.

Just a photo of me at work!

LowePro in action...

Using two cameras, a d70 and d200, with a LowePro belt with some of my gear on. I normally have the d70 with 18-70 lens on my shoulder, with the d200 and 70-200 over my head/shoulder.

I can swing the d200 round to my back (handsfree) and have total freedom with the d70 for closer shots of the athletes.

This keeps the weight of the bodies and lenses on my shoulders and off my neck.

The LowePro belt pack is great, as it has bags and holders where I want them, so everything is always in the same place - most of the time I can get stuff without even looking. Plus, I can run like a loony with all this gear on!

The beltpack is worn low on the hips and not tightly on the waist, and is not as tiring when worn this way. The longest I've had this setup on so far is about 8 hours...

The only thing you cant see in this image is the wireless PDA which send the images back to our onsite laptop, for instant processing, viewing and printing!

With CN Engineers on strike, Cndrs are running this train on beltpack to do the switching. some vintage beaters here.

The yard goats are getting bigger. 5362 is a newer beltpack equipped unit I believe. Lots of different units that have been equipped for remote operations lately. Didn't see an of the SD60s today though.

I have downloaded all of the pictures that were once displayed on fotopic. Since that service ceased, I thought I would check to make sure that they had been uploaded to flickr - and this one seemed to have been omitted.

Working the east end of the sprawling Canadian Pacific Agincourt Yard in Scarborough, the beltpack operator of a mother-daughter yard set goes to line the switch to move his remote-controlled consist onto another track.

STLH 1001 (an SW1200 rebuilt as a slug "daughter", and mated to mother GP9 1607 to supply electricity to her motors) still bears the St. Lawrence & Hudson markings that CP previously operated its eastern lines under, in a bid to spin them off unless profitability turned around.

Four parked locomotives in the CN yard at Coteau, QC. GP40-2W was born as a GO Transit commuter locomotive and is the second highest-numbered unit of this model on the CN roster. Its appearance has slightly changed since its purchase by CN, notably adding an electronic bell and a blinking light indicating it is a Beltpack remote-controlled locomotive. She also has lost her noodle somewhere along the way. However, she is one of the few units having retained its North America map on the long hood.

Here's what I usually pack for a wedding assignment:

I use a Lowepro CompuTrekker to carry my gear, although on site I just take what I need and leave it locked up some place secure. I'll usually bring a shoulder bag/beltpack, such as my Offtrail II, to carry lenses for changing.
