The convent was founded by the Order of Poor Knights of the Temple (or Templar Knights) in 1118. Its construction continued until the final part of the 12th century with the construction of the oratory, in one of the angles of the castle, completed by the Grand Master D. Gualdim Pais (sometime around 1160). Around 1190 it was encircled and resisted the armies of caliph Abu Yusuf al-Mansur who was successful in taking strongholds in the south. (A plaque was erected near the entrance to the castle to commemorate this event).

During the second quarter of the 13th century, Tomar was transferred into the control of the Templars, becoming its seat. The castle became an integral part of the defence system created by the Templars to secure the border of the young Christian Kingdom against the Moors, which at the time occupied the area to approximately the Tagus River. But, following the dissolution of the Templar Order, on 14 March 1319, and following the request of King Denis of Portugal, Pope John XXII instituted the Order of Christ. The seat of the former Knights Templar was converted in 1357 into the seat of this new order.

The famous round church (rotunda) of the castle of Tomar was also built in the second half of the 12th century. The church, like some other templar churches throughout Europe, was modelled after the Dome of the Rock in Jerusalem, which was believed by the crusaders to be a remnant of the Temple of Solomon. The Church of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem may also have served as model.

The façade has geometric patterns made from white and green marble. The Florentine Renaissance architect Leon Battista Alberti, designed the upper part of the façade, finished in 1470 (the year is also written on the top of the façade in Roman numerals: MCCCCLXX).

Santa Maria Novella is a Dominican church. It is considered the most important Romano-Gothic church in Tuscany. Its construction started in 1290 and it took almost 200 years to be completed. The Romanesque-Gothic bell tower and the sacristy were completed under the supervision of Friar Iacopo Talenti in 1360.

Its building and decoration was financed by rich Florentine families, several of which were granted the privilege of funerary chapels inside the church.

Close to the summer solstice, a rate and special sight can be seen in Munich. From the right location, the sun then passes right behind the belltowers of the iconic Frauenkirche. Coincidentally, the rooftop platform if the Munich Public Observatory (Volkssternwarte München) is such a location. A 1000 mm telephoto lens on my APS-C camera just had the perfect field if view to witness it. This is a single frame from the time lapse I recorded (coming soon!), Where the sun was exactly behind the towers. I found it particularly beautiful how it illuminated the windows of the belltowers as it was passing. The light clouds also gave this special atmosphere to the scene.

Here is the bell tower of the Ljusnarsberg Church at the opposite side of the street. In Sweden it is very common to install the church bells in a relatively low and very solidly built wooden building that is separate from the actual church building. Ljusnarbergs Church is no exception.

After starting the evening on the hotel roofdeck with a drink, I proceeded to a rooftop bar immediately across from the cathedral. It took a bit of finding; the hotel entrance was not obvious. But the joint was jumpin', as the old song goes, and I was squeezed into a spot at a balcony bar directly overlooking the cathedral.

The tower of Santa María del Salvador Church (Chinchilla de Montearagón, Albacete, Spain) has its origin in the 14th Century, when it was built with bricks and an octogonal plant floor, being decorated with tracery as Mudejar Gothic tradition. At the end of the 15th century, the entire brick gothic tower was covered with large ashlars in order to give it enough stability to place the bell tower structure on it, which mediated the 18th century, was replaced by the current one, with the number of openings increased to eight (two on each of its sides) as the picture shows.
