Behold I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and dine with him, and he with me..

-Revelation 3:20

Such a lovely moment when we stopped along the way, to gaze at the sunset as it drifted down to the horizon.

This is me, Todd, curator of this stream. I'm in front of the Imperial Geyser in Yellowstone National Park. Wonderful place. Remote and relatively underpopulated. Go ahead and jump in if you like swimming in boiling water! So cool! Just loved it. (Photo by Jean)

I tried to be a little more creative for the potato and snail image otherwise I think it would have been a little blah. Busy day so I am not taking extra time for much editing. The potato started to degrade in the sun quicker than I imagined it would. Every day another lesson.

für Smile on Saturday 21.6.25

Je n'avais pas d'idée pour le thème du Flick Friday de cette semaine (Beholder ou spectateur) jusqu'à ce dimanche où, me promenant sur la brocante en centre-ville d'Amiens, j'ai assisté à cette scène...

I had no idea for this week's theme for Flick Friday (Beholder or "spectateur" in french) until this Sunday when, walking around the flea market in downtown Amiens, I saw this scene.

For the third week in a row I encountered this Great Egret feeding at dawn on Armand Bayou near my put-in point at Bay Area Park.

Behold the captivating Saffron-crowned Tanager (Tangara xanthocephala) captured in its natural splendor at La Florida El Bosque de las Aves, Km 18, Cali, Colombia. As a fellow photographer dedicated to preserving the intricate beauty of our avian friends, this moment was a true delight to capture.

The vibrant plumage of the Saffron-crowned Tanager, set against the lush greenery of its habitat, creates a striking composition that draws the viewer into the heart of Colombia's biodiversity. Through careful framing and attention to detail, I aimed to showcase not only the bird's natural elegance but also the delicate interplay of light and shadow dancing across its feathers. Each click of the shutter served as a testament to the resilience and beauty of our natural world, reminding us of the importance of preserving these precious moments for generations to come. ©2021 Adam Rainoff Photographer

Yesterday we spend the nice morning walking to the nearby Shobrooke park to get a bit of fresh air after a horrendous Saturday spent indoors. The ducks followed us along the fishing pond but unfortunately we did not pack any bird food. The autumn colours are starting to come up very nicely and there are lots of old oak trees to behold. I was a bit unlucky with the light as the gorgeous sunshine which was present on our way to the park disappeared for the duration of our stay in the park and just came back out again once we walked back home :-P

I might go back for a few more autumn photos...

In the middle of summer I remembered that one of my winter jackets has these pretty buttons

This "Lord of the Rings" pewter goblet gave me inspiration for this week's theme, he appears to be the beholder of mystery and magic from a mythical bygone world.

I used gold coated A4 cards to enhance my window light, the gold colour was only really obvious in the shadow and the gold cards had a tendency to warp but I was pleased with the image produced.

Vewing a bucolic scene through a lensball, taken for the Flickr Friday group theme, "Beholder."

I wanted to have my hand in the sunlight, but the lensball acted like a magnifying glass and kept burning my palm.

As I browse through Flickr and other sites, I am at times blown away by the images I see. It can be by a majestic landscape, a subtle expression in a portrait, the frozen action of an athlete, the colors and shapes of an abstract or just the light. My heart will skip a beat, my pulse will quicken, I am moved. I am forced to stop, examine everything a bit closer, to think about how and why the photographer captured the image. It will circle back to my own work and I will try to think about whoever is viewing my images and hope they too will be moved in some way.

Yesterday I listened to a Ted Radio Hour podcast "The Meaning of Work" www.npr.org/podcasts/510298/ted-radio-hour. One of the people telling their stories was Dame Steve Shirley, an inspiring and fascinating woman. One of the things she said was "I have to make my life worth saving, and each day you spend as if it would be your last." I love this so much and it is made more meaningful when you calculate out the days of life expectancy. My 5 year old daughter and I figured out yesterday that one million hours is 114.155251 years and there are 36,524.25 days in 100 years. Some days it feels like our lives will go on forever but when you stop and acknowledge that there is a limit to our existence it can make you view your life in a very different and profound way. Start today and make your life worth saving!

My picture here just 'happened' and I love it. As soon as I saw it in the camera, I knew this was it.

For me, it brought to mind the saying "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder". In other words, what I think is beautiful, you may not. In essence, there's a literal meaning - that the perception of beauty is subjective - what one person finds beautiful another may not.

In researching the word I learned that it was Margaret Wolfe Hungerford (née Hamilton) who wrote many books, often under the pseudonym of 'The Duchess', who first wrote the actual line in 1878 "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder". Even before that, however, 16th century author William Shakespeare said "Beauty is bought by judgement of the eye, Not utter'd by base sale of chapmen's tongues". Then Benjamin Franklin in Poor Richard's Almanack, 1741, wrote: "Beauty, like supreme dominion, is but supported by opinion." David Hume in his Essays, Moral and Political, 1742, wrote "Beauty in things exists merely in the mind which contemplates them."

To make things even more interesting, it seems the saying was known as far back as the 3rd century BC in Greece. Whoever thought that researching just one word could bring up so much interesting information?
