Pont de l’Estacade

Beginning in the 1870s, it was common for painters to take as their subject the new urban spaces opened up by the massive growth of Paris, and throughout his career Lépine, who specialized in depictions of the movement of water and the reflection of light upon it, returned again and again to the banks of the Seine. The Pont de l’Estacade was a bridge that connected the Ile St. Louis with the Right Bank; it was built to shelter boats in the winter from drifting ice. This is one of many paintings of the subject by Lépine.
In 1874 Lépine exhibited a painting of the Seine at the Société Anonyme des Artistes, Peintres, Sculpteurs, Gravures, etc.—the first public showing of what came to be known as the Impressionist painters. What the painters in this group had in common was not a shared “style,” but the fact that they were progressive, independent artists interested in exhibiting outside the state-sponsored Salon system and dissatisfied with the parochialism of Academic and official art. Lépine continued to be a frequent exhibitor at the annual salons, however, and though he did not receive much critical or commercial recognition during his life, he was awarded a first-class medal for a painting of the Pont de l’Estacade at the International Exhibition of 1889, shortly before his death.
Subject Matter:
Lepine exhibited with the Impressionists and this painting is a good example of this little-studied Impressionist painter. This view of Paris from the river is full of light and delicately described atmosphere. His free handling of paint was derived from direct observation and the example of the Dutch painter Johan Barthold Jongkind.
Physical Description:
This painting shows a view of the Seine river in Paris, including the wooden bridge, the Pont de l'Estacade. The foreground is filled is small boats and a dock winch, while the in the distance the bridge and buildings of Paris glow in late afternoon light.

Natural light returns to the heart of the Museum for the first time in over half a century through the reopened and restored skylights.

The U-M Museum of Art (UMMA) is one of the oldest and largest university art museums in the country. Built as a war memorial in 1909 for the university’s Civil War fallen, the building originally housed U-M’s alumni office along with the University’s growing art collection. UMMA’s collections represent more than 150 years of collecting at the university, with more than 21,000 works of art that span cultures, eras, and media. The Museum hosts nearly 20 special exhibitions per year, and displays works from their permanent collection that features world renowned artists like James McNeill Whistler, Helen Frankenthaler, Pablo Picasso, Joshua Reynolds, Claude Monet, and Andy Warhol, among many others.
In addition to visual art, UMMA hosts a variety of performing arts events. The Helmut Stern Auditorium, located on the lower level of the Museum, is a state-of-the-art, acoustically superb space that seats 185, which hosts lectures, film screenings, readings, and performing arts events. The Auditorium is home to the Zell Visiting Writers Series readings and the Mark Webster Reading series—ongoing events that are free and open to the public.
UMMA hosts a variety of programs and events for all ages. Admission is free and open to the public.
The University of Michigan Museum of Art (UMMA) is a meeting place for the arts, bridging visual art and contemporary culture, scholarship and accessibility, tradition and innovation. The museum's collections include nearly 19,000 objects that span cultures, eras, and media and include European, American, Middle Eastern, Asian, and African art, as well as changing exhibits. The Museum of Art re-opened in 2009 after a three-year renovation and expansion. UMMA presents special exhibitions and diverse educational programs featuring the visual, performing, film and literary arts that contextualize the gallery experience.

This year I will begin my art journey. I have to make time to make art. I have to. And so it begins...
Old building that used to be a MGM screening place.. At the time we inhibited it, it was basically our warehouse. Where we were free to run around, have our shows, build our bikes.
Here is the beginning, the pre show of me converting an extra room into my portrait studio...I have a journal here that I am going to use to document all this fun so that others may learn from my inevitable mistakes.

For this week’s challenge, the theme is beginning. Many animals begin their lives as an egg, which is why I decided to photograph an egg for this week. This is a simple photograph, taken with the humble Canon 50mm f/1.8 II. No flash was used, since I knew next to nothing about flash or lighting when I first embarked on my photographic journey.
