The Beginning - Loading the bus for the first time. The stay in Ankara was just over night. We visited the Ataturk Mausoleum and the Museum of Anatolian Civilizations. The museum houses the greatest collection of Hittite antiquities in the world. The Hittite civilization flourished in central Anatolia in the second millennium BC and at one time rivaled that of ancient Egypt. Catahoyuk is believed to be the oldest city in the world and dates from approximately 6000 BC, it is located near Konya. A replica of a house in Catahoyuk has been created in the museum.

I like a condition like this.

beginning is charming.

Although weather is still quite warm these days in germany, leaves are falling everywhere. Just the right to right time to pick up my X100 and photograph in the setting sun.

In the Beginning is an experience at Westminster Abbey where the audience is read extracts from the King James Version of the Bible, read by actors and produced by the Bush Theatre, London.

note to travelers: this is not a typical staircase. it's freaking steep. i'm not saying you shouldn't climb it. i mean, if you've gone all the way out there, i would hope you're getting as intimate as possible with these historical temples. just exercise caution is all.

1 mi. E of Gran Quivira on NM 10

Gran Quivira, NM (Socorro County)

Gran Quivera (also know as Las Humanas) largest of the Salinas pueblos, was an important trade center for many years before and after the Spanish entrada. The people resisted the newcomers at first, but they reconciled themselves to the Spanish presence and borrowed freely from them, as they had from other cultures.

Documents from the 1600s tell of strife between missionaries and the encomenderos, who complained that the friars kept the Indians so busy studying Christianity and building churches that the encomenderos could neither use Indian labor nor collect their tributes. In the 1660s friars burned and filled kivas in an effort to exterminate the old religion. Hurriedly altered above-ground rooms converted to kivas attest to the Pueblo priests' response. A second church was begun around 1659, but was never completed, partly because Apache raids had begun. In 1672, further weakened by drought and famini, the inhabitants (only 500 by that time) abandoned the pueblo. (from NPS Brochure)

Mound 7 is the largest of the pueblo mounds at Gran Quivira. Following the abandonment of the earlier circular pueblo around 1400, the first rectangular rooms of Mound 7 were built between 1400 and 1515. Following a thirty year abandonment, the rooms of Mound 7 began to expand further. By the beginning of the Spanish period with the arrival of Don Antonio de Espejo in 1583, the Mound 7 pueblo had over 200 rooms. Fray Francisco Letrado was able to negotiate the use of eight of these rooms in 1629, and built an additional eight rooms the following year. (1)

A young child in the glow of the morning sun.

Shuri Castle (Okinawan: /suigusiku/, Japanese: 首里城 Shurijō) is a gusuku (Ryūkyūan castle) in Shuri, Okinawa. It was the palace of the Ryūkyū Kingdom. In 1945, during the Battle of Okinawa, it was almost completely destroyed, with only a few walls standing as high as a few decimeters. In 1992, it was reconstructed on the original site based on photographs, historical records, and memory.

The date of construction is uncertain, but it was clearly in use as a castle during the Sanzan period. It is thought that it was probably built during the Gusuku period, like the other castles of Okinawa. When King Shō Hashi unified the three sections of Okinawa and established the Ryūkyū Kingdom, he used Shuri Castle as a residence. At the same time, Shuri flourished as the capital, and continued to do so during the second Sho dynasty.

For 450 years from the beginning of the 15th century, it was the royal court and administrative center of the Ryūkyūan Kingdom. It was the focal point of foreign trade, as well as the political, economical and cultural heart of the Ryūkyūs.
