A mysterious night photo of the fascinating fireplace and television of 1920s abandoned transcontinental airport languishing in obscurity somewhere in the Mojave Desert. I illuminated the night scene with warm white and red light from a handheld ProtoMachines LED2 light during the long exposure. Light painting to illuminate subjects is a beautiful, addictive art, as you can walk around the scene, deciding what to bring to light and what to keep in shadow. And it's more fun than typing key prompts for AI-generated art.

Be careful!! This dinosaur looks like it's about to poke its terrifying head through your screen and take a chunk out of you! I photographed these in Borrego Springs on a cool spring evening. These magnificent sculptures were created by Ricardo Breceda. It was illuminated by a full moon and light from a handheld ProtoMachines light painting device during the exposure. The Church of Granite

Have you traipsed across the desert at night to try to find something fantastic? I had heard that in the early 1940s, more than a million soldiers, infantry, artillery, pilots, and more trained in the Mojave Desert. They trained in some of the harshest conditions. The wind just may still carry some of the prayers from the lips of the military personnel who sacrificed here. This stone chapel was built by hand and is one of the few remaining structures left from that time long ago.

What is your favorite plant in the American Southwest? For me, it just might be the Joshua Tree. Strange, resilient, and otherworldly, I can't help but feel a connection. This was a beautifully cool, cloudy January evening in Joshua Tree National Park, Mojave Desert. I photographed and scouted a bit for a night portrait photo shoot the next evening. Aware of The Night

I always find myself wondering who lived here and why they left. Stars streak overhead on a quiet night at a very remote abandoned cinder mining camp in the Mojave Desert. The mine is located near one of the numerous cinder cones in the region, the result of ancient black basalt lava flows. Illuminated during the exposure by a full moon and a handheld ProtoMachines LED2 light painting device, illuminating everything during the exposure. I hadn't had a flat tire in many years. However, some of the very rough roads brought that long streak to an end around midnight. That aside, it was a beautiful quiet night for photography.

The Stars of Llano Del Rio

The desert holds many mysteries. One of these mysteries is Llano Del Rio. This grain silo is part of the 100 year old ruins of Llano del Rio Colony, a socialist utopian community, established in SE Antelope Valley in 1914. The colony's local economy was almost totally self-sustaining. Their economy included agriculture, orchards, a paint shop, a print shop, and a fish hatchery. Despite the desert climate, their farms succeeded, their farmers using purchased water to create fertile farmland, and growing alfalfa, corn, and grain, stored here in this grain silo. By 1916, Llano Del Rio grew ninety percent of the food they ate. A world class rabbitry provided the colonists with their main source of meat; and a large stable complex just outside the colony could house up to 100 horses. I illuminated the scene with a handheld LED flashlight and speedlight with gel while the camera shutter was open.

Raise your hand if horses are your favorite animal. They're apparently the fourth most popular animal in the world and native to North America. The timeless act of two horses facing off at night in the California desert. Could you imagine being locked up in a small jail cell in the heat or cold of the Sonoran Desert? If you did the crime, you did the time in this two-cell jail in a ghost town in Arizona. Holding a ProtoMachines LED2 light painting device, Late at night, I illuminated the exterior with a warm white light and the interiors of the two cells with the various colors of the RGB spectrum as a member of the Notorious RGB might do. This was photographed during a three-night trip with night photographer Mike Cooper, exploring the remote corners of the desert.

I had the opportunity to capture a truly unique image during the Notorious RGB 1165-mile photography safari with my friends Mike Cooper, George Loo, and George the monkey. It was an eerie and mysterious scene - a vintage bus with a sign that read "Have exact fare ready", which I illuminated by a brilliant red and white light from my handheld flashlight during a long exposure night photo. The interior of the bus was a maze of shadows and light, with the sign serving as a haunting reminder of the bus's past life. It almost felt like I was entering "The Twilight Zone", with the bus serving as a portal to another time and place. Although abandoned and dilapidated, the brilliant red and white light inside the vintage 1935 Yellow Coach city bus brings out some intricate details of the interior with the night sky ever-present. I love the whole experience of night photography. Absolutely magical.

Wood being scarce, Tom Kelly decided he'd build a house with other material: glass bottles. Lots of them. Kelly collected over 50,000 bottles in six months from the 50 saloons in Rhyolite. He built a three-room house with porch and quaint gingerbread trim. Inside, the walls were covered with plaster. It's really a unique, beautiful and comfortable house. I illuminated the scene with warm white and teal (GST) light during the long exposure. Light painting to illuminate subjects is a beautiful, addictive art, as you can walk around the scene, deciding what to bring to light and what to keep in shadow. I had special permission to photograph this at night. It is ordinarily locked up at night.

Night photo close-up of a beautiful if rusty old Packard. A prospector from nearby Cadiz didn't have much money, so he ate dog food so that he could purchase this gorgeous 1948 Packard brand new. Located on historic Route 66 at the Mojave Desert Heritage and Cultural Association in Goffs, CA. I illuminated the scene with a handheld ProtoMachines LED2 light while the camera's shutter was open during this long exposure night photo. This was on a trip with night photographer Tony Donofrio and George the monkey for a short November trip.

Can we make #tectonictuesday a thing? Let’s make #tectonictuesday a thing. Pinnacles is a revelation. Spires and mountains of rock moved by tectonic plates? Probably one of the coolest geological concepts I’ve ever encountered. And, easily, one of the most strangely beautiful and stark environments I’ve ever hiked through. Pinnacles has the best parts of Joshua Tree, Craters of the Moon, and other desert and chaparral parks all rolled into one.
