YOC – the Official Year of Creativity – is an initiative launched by AdmCom to dedicate 2008 to the exploration of the infinite potential of creative energy. The project includes a series of messages and opportunities embracing different forms and media designed to be both “used” and invented by the people contacted.
“Be the change you want to see in the world.” This is the idea behind the initiative on the site. A personalized business card creator, a multiplier of imaginary identities, a stimulator of possibilities …

Professor Epping participated in Be the Change Volunteers, a development aid non-profit organization dedicated to creating better education opportunities worldwide, with two UW students. He wrote, "In a remote area of Perú known as Chino, only accessible by boat on the Amazon River, we documented and helped build an elementary school building. Three of the four goals for global engagement at UW are: driving excellence, inspiring students, and impacting communities. Our work in Perú fulfilled all of these. The trip was rewarding because we facilitated education in an area of the world that lacks a lot of the resources we have in the United States. Education changes lives and I think we all were allowed an opportunity to see vast living differences in the world. We had a lot of fun, but the trip was also demanding. Being in the jungle meant no electricity beyond solar power, no hot water, no air conditioning, a plethora of bug bites, and communal bathrooms. In also might be the case that a tarantula, bat, or heron tried to enter our cabins. While working, the temperatures were hot and humid. It also rained on us. Being uncomfortable and a little sleep deprived were realities we all faced. The UW students and I learned that we could do hard things. But more importantly, we learned that there are people in the world who can benefit from sustained action by varying members of a community who believe in education and its necessity to advance one's well-being."

This shot features a framed print of a photograph taken by Joel (aka Boy_Wonder), a talented young Canadian artist/photographer, who's Flickr photostream I have been following and admiring for a few months now.
Joel is amazingly creative, which combined with his keen photography skills, a real joi de vivé and a well grounded philosophical outlook on life makes his photostream a real inspirational gem here on Flickr, so don't just take my word for it go and see for yourself and check out his Flickr page. :-)
Anyhow back to this shot, Joel is participating in a 2,000 km two month bicycle tour commencing in June with a youth organisation called The Otesha Project, cycling from British Columbia to Saskatchewan with the aim in Joel's words of "using theatre to spread the message of sustainability, responsibility, and knowledge of our impact on the earth. We'll be educating more than 2,000 young Canadians about how they can be the change they wish to see in the world! "
So to fund-raise towards his trip Joel is selling selected prints of his photographic work, which is where I came in by making a small contribution to Joel's fundraising and purchasing this fabulous print of his be the change Ghandi creation. Needless to say I am absolutely delighted with Joel's print. :-)
As for Joel's fundraising, he still has a way to go to reach his target by 24th June, so if you are interested in maybe supporting Joel's Otesha Project fundraising efforts and acquiring a print of his artwork this is the direct link to his fundraising page.
I rather fear my own creative effort here does not do justice to Joel's creation although I hope my choice of frame is more sympathetic, but you can be assured it will have pride of place on my desk! :-)
Thanks to Joel for inspiring me over these past months and a bon voyage!
I maybe heading off tomorrow on my own bike journey, although mine is on my motorbike and I'm only travelling a few hundred miles to the South Coast for a few days camping break and to reflect on my future plans away from the stresses and pressure of late.

This photo was taken on one of my many trips to the Houston Zoo. I love that this big guy has his tongue slightly out. The lion population around the world is dwindling at an alarming rate, and the extinction of this beautiful creature leads to the extinction of other animals. Let's be the change, friends.

"Go be that starving Artist you’re afraid to be. Open up that journal and get poetic finally. Volunteer. Suck it up and travel. You were not born here to work and pay taxes. You were put here to be part of a vast organism to explore and create. Stop putting it off. The world has much more to offer than what’s on 15 televisions at TGI Fridays. Take pictures. Scare people. Shake up the scene. Be the change you want to see in the world. You’ll thank yourself for it."
Yes. Exactly what I needed to read after the week I've had, and I hope it helps you as well. <3

I started this lovely journey one year ago when I decided to tag along with a group of Fuggers who decided to do 365 Days (some for the first time/some for the second time). I figured doing such a daunting project would be easier if I did it with a group of people I "knew" from other groups.
This project was fun, tiring, inspiring, arduous and in the end managed to teach me a lot about both myself and photography. While I will never be the world's greatest photgrapher I have learned a lot in the past year (and hope to learn tons more) and even I (my toughest critic) am able to see the progression in my photographs.
I don't think I would have been able to complete this project without the support of others on this site. So I would like to thank the following:
I would like to thank Amanda, Carrie, Pete and Mark for "taking me in" and showing me the fun side of Flickr from the get go. They were always quick to help me out and show me around Flickr and they have remained supportive throughout my 365 project.
I would also like to thank Wendy for teaching more about photography than my brain could ever handle. She taught me about 1/1000th of what she knows but that has been enough to keep me busying/practicing for a long time. I am very grateful for her help and she was a major reason why my photography has advanced as much as it has.
I hate to lump everyone together in this next group but this will be a novel if I wrote a testimonial for each of them. These folks stopped by my stream on a regular (if not daily) basis and were kind enough to comment on my photos. For that I am very grateful.....your comments made it that much easier to take a photo everyday. So a big thanks to Tom, Charlie (Crustydolphin), Amanda (Cakeybabes), WinglessAngel, Tuesday, Kelly (CUtiger), Narly, Jimmay (COTU), Cat Klein, MC-1, Bethechange, Un4gtableann, Jeff the Trojan, Trish, Scout, Mez, Maite, The Manilow, MIke B., and Marie (hippiechic).
I apologize profusley if I left you off the list. It is do to my ignorance/short memory and not to the fact that you haven't stopped by my stream. Thanks to you all again and I will see you in your streams.

Be the Change. This letter to yourself is something I always find interesting and worth doing. What goals, what promises have I made with myself for the next four or so years? Will I keep them? What am I going to do with my life here at JMU? I am at JMU for a reason. I was called to come to JMU, but why? I am destined to be something. I am going to be the change.
The quote on the bottom is a very powerful message; we want changes in this world that isn't close to perfect, but in order for that to happen, we need to be the change.

Behold the Art Float for Social Change! Our unique parade float features Mother Earth and a circle of waving hands, spinning on a carousel of art pulled by the pataphysical dragon Quetzy. We presented the Art Float to thousands of participants at the colorful Fairfax Festival Parade on June 9, 2018. Photo by Dana Dworin.
The Art Float was created by Fabrice Florin, Geo Monley and over a hundred volunteers at Tam Makers, with the gracious support of Good Earth, MVCAN, Pataphysical Studios, Tam High School and the Youth Poster Contest. Activists Greg Brockbank and the Freedom Singers stood on the float podium and led us into song with classics like ‘This Land is Your Land’. They took turns with local musicians Sheri Cooper and Clancy Bounds, who inspired us with their heartfelt songs for a better world. We hope to engage more people to participate in democracy -- and we invite you all to vote, speak up -- and be the change!
Thanks to all our friends and neighbors who made this project possible! We are particularly grateful to our wonderful event crew, including Derek Bacchus, Joey Burnett, Phyllis Florin and Marilyn Price, as well as videographer Kim Spencer, photographers Dana Dworin and Grace Severtson. For this event, we had the privilege of marching with like-minded partners: the Climate Action Coalition carried a large white crane held by members of 350Marin, Marin Clean Energy, Sustainable Fairfax, Drawdown Marin, Sierra Club Marin and Mamas on Fire. And peace activist Jes Richardson closed our procession with his GandhiMobile. Special thanks as well to Cynthia Briggs and the gracious organizers of the Fairfax Festival Parade.
We’ll present the Art Float again at the Fourth of July Parade in Corte Madera -- and throughout California in fall 2018, to help get out the vote for our next elections. Learn more here: www.tammakers.org/art-float/
