A very famous ship, stunts, children’s entertainer Steve Royle and even a Strong Lady – there’s lots to look forward to at this year’s Pirates on the Dock!

Avast ye! Pirates on the Dock thunders into action this weekend (September 16-17) and you will not believe what we have in store for you as this now legendary swashbuckling, family adventure returns to Albert Dock!

Mohini Das was born in Batala in 1922 and joined All-India Radio Lahore in 1939 at the age of 17. Mohini was soon a major female Urdu-language voice and almost every major radio play, or special announcement, had her behind the microphone. With time she kept on improving and excelling in her art. On the 14th of August, 1947, and Mohini became the first woman broadcaster of Pakistan. She had changed her name to Mohini Hameed and had already a daughter who came to be known as Kanwal Hameed. Just as Mohini Hameed was Pakistan’s first woman broadcaster, her daughter Kanwal Hameed, now known as Kanwal Naseer after her marriage to Col Naseer, became Pakistan’s first woman telecaster. In 1965 she was awarded the ‘Tamgha-e-Imtiaz’ and in 1969 when for the first time the United Nations declared it a ‘Woman’s Year’, it was the picture of Mohini Hameed that donned UN posters the world over. After working from Lahore for a full 50 years, the woman with the golden voice, Mohini Hameed, retired and with her husband A. Hameed migrated to the USA to live a meaningful life recording religious programmes for broadcasting to Pakistan and the Middle East. In 1998 she was again awarded a second ‘Tamgha-e-Imtiaz’ and in 1999 given a ‘Lifetime Achievement Award’ by the Pakistan Broadcasting Corporation. She passed away in 2009 and the Lahore studio of Radio Pakistan was renamed ‘Mohini Hameed Studio’.

Batalá San Francisco is a Brazilian-style percussion and dance group that performs throughout the San Francisco Bay Area at a wide range of community, private, corporate, and club events. Founded in 2012, Batalá San Francisco is the local chapter of Batalá Mundo, founded in 1997 by Brazilian percussionist Giba Goncalves. Batalá Mundo currently numbers more than 1000 drummers in more than 30 international groups. The mission of Batalá is to preserve and promote Afro-Brazilian drumming traditions throughout the world, educating and spreading the infectious rhythms through their performances.

This is the third year that Batalá San Francisco has participated in Carnaval San Francisco and their theme is "Sacred Water." Batalá San Francisco's artistic director Deborah Valoma has designed commemorative t-shirts and free-style dancers will be carrying umbrellas that represent the sacred water that washes over us all. No matter our religion, we honor Yemanja and Oshun, sacred goddesses of the ocean and sweet river waters. For more information go to their website: www.batalasanfrancisco.com.

Bristol Batala gave two impressive performances during the first "Make Sunday Special" event of 2014.

From their Facebook Page:

'Samba is the sound of the Brazilian carnival and samba reggae is a style from the north-eastern Brazilian state of Bahia. It's a stripped down sound; no bells, no shakers, no whistles, just the raw, hypnotic groove of the drums.

Batala is an international collective of samba reggae groups. Batala Bristol was founded in May 2011 and is one of seven groups in the UK'
