The French Open is the premier clay court tennis tournament in the world. It is one of the most prestigious events in tennis, and it has the widest worldwide broadcasting and audience of all regular events in this sport. Because of the slow playing surface and the five-set men's singles matches without a tiebreak in the final set, Roland Garros (name of the event) is widely considered to be the most physically demanding tennis tournament in the world.

The Pipevine Swallowtail (Battus philenor) is a North and Central American butterfly known for its black wings with iridescent blue-green hindwings and a row of orange spots on the underside of the hindwings. Its larvae, or caterpillars, feed exclusively on pipevine plants, which contain toxins that make both the caterpillars and adult butterflies poisonous to predators. Adult butterflies feed on the nectar of various flowers and are important pollinators

The Blue Swallowtail (Pipevine). This might be mistaken for a female, but it is the same butterfly as in the previous picture (a male) with the light striking the hind wings at a different angle.

(Battus polydamas) These fast moving butterflies love to nectar at the firebush. It's a good thing I have so many firebush plants in the backyard to support all of them. This image was taken through the living room window this morning just before it started raining. I get the most delightful feeling when the sun is shinning and it is also raining. It's just so beautiful and kind of magical.

Starchytarpheta frantzii / Mantis / Battus polydamas

When I shoot tropical butterflies, the butterfly house I visit has a no flash policy. I try and circumvent this by using a tripod which allows for longer shutter times and this works pretty well.

This particular gold rim swallowtail (Battus polydamas), also known as the tailless swallowtail, fortunately sat on a tree in really good light so the details on it came quite a lot nicer than usual.

This is a cropped version which makes it easier to see the details, but for the full, 50 megapixel version, have a look here: www.flickr.com/photos/tinyturtle/52964542665/

The Pipevine Swallowtail (Battus philenor) is a swallowtail butterfly found in North America and Central America. The butterflies are black with iridescent blue hind wings. They are found in many different habitats, but are most commonly found in forests. The black or red caterpillars feed on Aristolochia species, making them poisonous as both larvae and adults, while the adults feed on the nectar of a variety of flowers.

The upper surface of the hind wings are an iridescent blue or blue-green with pale, arrow-head markings. Males have brighter metallic regions than females. The underside of the hind wing has seven orange submarginal spots surrounded by iridescent blue. Both surfaces of the fore wings are black or dull blackish-brown.Individuals are smaller and hairier in northern California. Pipevine Swallowtails or also called Battus Philenor, can have a wingspan to up to three and a half inches. Battus Philenor can usually be found in fields, meadows, gardens, parks, open woods, roadsides and stream sides.

A male Pipevine Swallowtail. This species is also called the Blue Swallowtail for obvious reasons. But the blue is the result of a strong iridescence and is dependent on the angle of the light. (see next photograph).

Polydamas Swallowtail Butterfly (Battus polydamas). Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden, Coral Gables, Florida.

It's extremely difficult to photograph the swallowtails, because they never stop fluttering their wings and seldom stay for more than a couple of seconds on any given flower.

Please, take the time tho FAVE this photo, that is if you think it deserves a FAVE!
