Vanuit Nederland ken ik basaltformaties alleen als dijkbekleding. Op IJsland zie ik ze in hun natuurlijke omgeving, hier een onderkant van een formatie in Hjóðaklettar.

From The Netherlands I know basalt formations only as coverings of dikes. Here on Iceland I see basalt formations in their natural surroundings. Here the underside of a basalt formation in Hjóðaklettar.

If you look closely you can see many basalt columns that make up this unique scene from coastal Iceland
Quite excited by this, on first glance it is a building site. However the footings have been sunk into the top of a basalt lava flow. The site is around 3/4 of a mile West of the Carlton Hill Volcanic Complex, which is probably the remains of a volcanic vent( there are quite a few in Derbyshire).
There is a thick band of yellow clay on top of the lava, this is most probably decayed volcanic material this is followed by 1 metre of spheroidal weathered vesicular basalt. This appears to be breaking down quite readily into clay minerals.
After about a metre fresh basalt can be found. Pockets of which are quite coarse grained, in fact edging towards a gabbro.
The presence of this lava probably increases the likely hood of springs being found in the area, possibly the reason why this area was chosen for the siting of Chelmorton
An outcrop of pillow basalts, seen at a roadcut close to Priboj, Serbia. Pillow basalts are the result of sub-aqueus or submarine volcanic eruptions.
Gjáin is a verdant little valley nestled amidst the dry and desolate desert highlands surrounding the area.

The columnar basalt below Hofsós in Skagafjordur, Iceland is a beautiful sight.
Columnar Basalt is a common extrusive volcanic rock. It is usually grey to black and fine-grained due to the fast cooling of lava at the surface of a moon or planet. It may be porphyritic containing larger crystals in a fine matrix, or vesicular, or frothy scoria. Unweathered basalt is black or grey.
By definition, basalt is defined as an aphanitic igneous rock that contains, by volume, less than 20% quartz and less than 10% feldspathoid and where at least 65% of the feldspar is in the form of plagioclase. On Earth, most basalt magmas have formed by decompression melting of the mantle. Basalt commonly erupts on Io, and has also formed on Earth's Moon, Mars, Venus, and even on the asteroid Vesta.
Source rocks for the partial melts probably include both peridotite and pyroxenite (e.g., Sobolev et al., 2007). The crustal portions of oceanic tectonic plates are composed predominantly of basalt, produced from upwelling mantle below ocean ridges.
The term basalt is at times applied to shallow intrusive rocks with a composition typical of basalt, but rocks of this composition with a phaneritic (coarse) groundmass are generally referred to as diabase (also called dolerite) or gabbro.

An area of about 40,000 interlocking basalt columns, the result of an ancient volcanic fissure eruption. The tops of the columns form stepping stones that lead from the cliff foot and disappear under the sea. Most of the columns are hexagonal, although some have four, five, seven or eight sides. According to legend, the columns are the remains of a causeway built by a giant.
