Completely new graphic for this agency! They wanted something that would be easily recognizable both during the daytime and at night. So, this fully reflective graphics package works for their needs. This agency also decided to go with the Hybrid version of this vehicle. It looks very nice and the "green" nature of the vehicle will support their community goals.

This was apparently a lava flow hitting an old river and the rapid cooling crystallized rather than crumbled the stone. This is a very nice unmodified picture of the stream flowing down.

"Blue Dragon" Basalt. Basalt from the "Blue Dragon" Flow often exhibits an unusual intense blue color. The outer layer of this particular lava tongue consists of a thin amorphous glassy film containing clusters of tiny partially-oxidized titanian magnetite crystals. Reflection of light from the surface of these particles produces the effect. Below this surface layer, the color of the basalt is the typical brown to black. Craters of the Moon National Monument. Vesicular basalt in the Holocene of Idaho, USA.

Southern Idaho’s Snake River Plain represents the track of the Yellowstone Hotspot. Yellowstone is currently located in northwestern Wyoming. In the geologic past, the center of Yellowstone volcanism was in southern Idaho, and before that, it was located in southeastern Oregon.

Eight separate, large, dark-colored lava fields cover portions of the modern Snake River Plain: Shoshone Lava Field, Craters of the Moon Lava Field, Wapi Lava Field, Kings Bowl Lava Field, Cerro Grande Lava Field, North Robbers Lava Field, South Robbers Lava Field, and Hell’s Half Acre Lava Field. These lavas erupted during the late Pleistocene and Holocene, well after the Yellowstone Hotspot “migrated” to the northeast. The lavas are so young that little vegetation covers them. Portions of the Snake River Plain's basaltic lava fields have been designated as Craters of the Moon National Monument. The flows & cones in the Craters of the Moon Lava Field range in age from ~15 ka to ~2 ka. The landscape is harshly beautiful and provides an excellent opportunity to closely examine terrestrial basalt volcanism.

Seen here is ~2400 year old vesicular basalt at Big Craters, a cinder cone complex in the Craters of the Moon Lava Field. Vesicular basalts have relatively large holes that were originally gas bubbles in lava. The vesicles are frequently elongated (stretched) by lava movement before final solidification.

There is nothing like columnar basalt to create an impressive waterfall.

The Toketee (Chinook Indian name for "graceful") is a waterfall located on the North Umpqua River, about 58 miles east of Roseburg, near State Highway 138. Carved from ancient columnar basalt, Toketee Falls drops approximately 120 feet in two stages.

The columnar basalt below Hofsós in Skagafjordur, Iceland is a beautiful sight.

Columnar Basalt is a common extrusive volcanic rock. It is usually grey to black and fine-grained due to the fast cooling of lava at the surface of a moon or planet. It may be porphyritic containing larger crystals in a fine matrix, or vesicular, or frothy scoria. Unweathered basalt is black or grey.

By definition, basalt is defined as an aphanitic igneous rock that contains, by volume, less than 20% quartz and less than 10% feldspathoid and where at least 65% of the feldspar is in the form of plagioclase. On Earth, most basalt magmas have formed by decompression melting of the mantle. Basalt commonly erupts on Io, and has also formed on Earth's Moon, Mars, Venus, and even on the asteroid Vesta.

Source rocks for the partial melts probably include both peridotite and pyroxenite (e.g., Sobolev et al., 2007). The crustal portions of oceanic tectonic plates are composed predominantly of basalt, produced from upwelling mantle below ocean ridges.

The term basalt is at times applied to shallow intrusive rocks with a composition typical of basalt, but rocks of this composition with a phaneritic (coarse) groundmass are generally referred to as diabase (also called dolerite) or gabbro.

Agglutinated volcanic bomb in basaltic lapillistone in the Precambrian of Ontario, Canada.

These unusual-looking rocks are part of the Late Archean-aged Kidd-Munro Assemblage, which consists of ultramafic and mafic volcanic rocks intruded by mafic to ultramafic dikes and sill-like bodies. Minor felsic volcanic rocks are also present. Volcanogenic massive sulfide deposits occur in the Kidd-Munro Assemblage - they have been mined at the Texas Gulf Mine and the Potter Mine.

This outcrop consists of clast-supported, coarse-grained, fragmental tholeiitic basalt - it's a tholeiitic basalt breccia (it's also been characterized as a hyaloclastite). The fragments vary in shape from angular to agglutinated to convoluted, including delicate shapes. This indicates no fragment transport. Fragments vary significantly in size, but most are lapilli-sized (= volcanic fragments between 2 and 64 millimeters). This rock has been interpreted as a proximal vent facies/spatter rampart deposit. An underwater, volcanic fissure eruption occurred here 2.7 billion years ago, resulting in subaqueous fire fountaining. This was the site of an ancient volcanic edifice.

The large clast at center is a volcanic bomb. Click on the photo to zoom in - notice that the bomb is composed of numerous smaller pieces that have molded together. Such objects are called agglutinated bombs.

--------------------------

Description of site from Houlé et al. (2010) [sans parenthetical citations]:

Approximately 500 meters east of the Potter Mine area, the basaltic volcaniclastic rocks are massive to poorly bedded, unsorted, and consist of globular, irregular "moulded" lapilli that resemble agglutinate, fluidal bombs, cored bombs, blocks, and armoured lapilli, with less than 10% matrix containing fine, plate-like hyaloclastite shards and lapilli. Accessory fragments of chert, carbonaceous mudstone, argillaceous mudstone, and massive sulfide account for less than 1% of the breccia.

The basaltic volcaniclastic rocks were previously interpreted to have been derived through quench fragmentation and autobrecciation of basaltic flows. However, the lack of basalt flows and in situ hyaloclastite, the abundance of fluidal and cored bombs, armoured lapilli, globular lapilli, and the shear volume of breccia led Gibson and Gamble (2000) to propose an origin through "explosive fragmentation" rather than autobrecciation. The production of large volumes of lapilli-size granules is interpreted to be a product of the rapid eruption of low-viscosity mafic magma into a water column, where the magma was jetted into the water column, torn apart, and quench fragmented. In this model, massive, poorly sorted tuff breccia containing globular, lapilli-size agglutinate and fluidal bombs are interpreted to represent vent-proximal deposits, similar to subaerial fire fountain and spatter rampart deposits.

Amygdaloidal basalt from the Precambrian of Michigan, USA.

The Portage Lake Volcanic Series is an extremely thick, Precambrian-aged, flood basalt deposit that fills up an ancient continental rift valley. This rift valley, analogous to the present-day East African Rift Valley, extends from Kansas to Minnesota to the Lake Superior area to southern Michigan. Unlike many flood basalts (e.g., Deccan Traps, Siberian Traps, Columbia River), the Portage Lake only filled up the rift valley. The unit is exposed throughout Michigan's Keweenaw Peninsula, in the vicinity of the towns of Houghton & Hancock.

The Portage Lake succession thickens northward through the Keweenaw, reaching over 5.5 kilometers worth of section in places. The dominant rock type is basalt - vesicular basalts, for the most part. Most of the original vesicles (gas bubbles) have since been filled up with a wide variety of different minerals. A vesicular basalt that has had its vesicles filled up with minerals is called an amygdaloidal basalt. Keweenaw amygdaloidal basalts have long had significant economic importance because native copper (Cu) is one of the more common vesicle-filling and fracture-filling minerals. Keweenaw has (had) the highest concentration of native copper anywhere on Earth. Numerous Keweenaw-area copper mines have exploited these cupriferous amygdaloidal basalts. Almost all of the copper mines have since shut down.

Basalt is the not the only lithology in the Portage Lake succession - coarse-grained siliciclastics (conglomerates, sandstones) were occasionally deposited atop the basalts between lava flow events. These beds are fairly similar to the coarse-grained siliciclastics in the overyling Copper Harbor Conglomerate.

The rock seen here is a typical Portage Lake amygdaloidal basalt. The dark-colored material is basalt. The lighter-colored spots and masses are various minerals that have filled up former vesicles in the lava.

Stratigraphy: upper Portage Lake Volcanic Series (immediately adjacent to the Allouez Conglomerate & below the Greenstone Flow), Bergland Group, middle Keweenawan Supergroup, upper Mesoproterozoic, ~1.094 Ga

Vanuit Nederland ken ik basaltformaties alleen als dijkbekleding. Op IJsland zie ik ze in hun natuurlijke omgeving, hier een onderkant van een formatie in Hjóðaklettar.

From The Netherlands I know basalt formations only as coverings of dikes. Here on Iceland I see basalt formations in their natural surroundings. Here the underside of a basalt formation in Hjóðaklettar.
