June 25, 2023 - San Nicolás de Bilbao (San Nikolas Eliza) "The church of San Nicolás de Bari enjoys a privileged location in the centre of Bilbao, a short distance from Plaza Nueva and Teatro Arriaga and facing the Areatza park. This lovely church was designed by the Basque architect Ignacio Ibero, and was built between 1743 and 1756.
However, its history dates back to a time when the El Arenal de Bilbao promenade was no more than a stretch of sand on the edge of the Nervión estuary, which was subject to regular flooding. This area later became a fishing quarter, and it was the fishermen who, in medieval times, built a hermitage there to honour Saint Nicolás de Bari, the patron saint of seafarers. As the population increased, this tiny hermitage was enlarged until it became a parish church. Unfortunately, it was destroyed by flooding in 1553.
The church of San Nicolás has a Greek cross floor plan set within a square. Considering that Ignacio Ibero had been tasked with continuing Carlo Fontana’s project for the famous sanctuary of Loyola, it seems logical that the Roman architect’s design would influence Ibero’s decision to use a central floor plan in his design for the Bilbao church. These kinds of floor plans always create small dead spaces in the remaining corners, which, in the church of San Nicolás, contain the chapels and the sacristy.
The church’s façade, constructed like the rest of the building from hewn Ganguren stone, reflects a Baroque style remarkable for its austere character in comparison with the Roman Jesuit churches of the Gesù and San Ignacio. This simplicity is evident in its windows and in the fine pilasters and cornices that cover the frontage, directing attention towards the focal point, the main entrance, above which a tympanum frames two lions rampant with the shield of Bilbao between. The cast bronze relief above the door is the work of the Barcelona sculptor Josep Llimona, and is the result of a renovation of the main entrance at the end of the nineteenth century.
The ruggedness of the lower part of the building gives way to a lightness in the upper part of the façade, where the church’s two robust towers are capped with crosses. The breathtaking interior cupola appears from outside the building as an octagonal prism, although its presence is somewhat obscured by the belfry that surmounts the façade." Vaux-le-Vicomte (Est.1658) - a baroque French château on a 33 hectares (100 acres) estate with formal gardens along a three-kilometer axis. Built between 1658 to 1661 as a symbol of power and influence and intended to reflect the grandeur of Nicolas Fouquet, Marquis de Belle Île, Viscount of Melun and Vaux, the superintendent of finances of Louis XIV.
The château was an influential work of architecture in mid-17th-century Europe. The architect Louis Le Vau, the landscape architect André le Nôtre, and the painter-decorator Charles Le Brun worked together on this large-scale project. This marked the beginning of the "Louis XIV style" combining architecture, interior design and landscape design. Their next following project was to build Versailles.

The Temple of Love, built in 1778 by Richard Mique (1728-94), designed in a neo-classical style.
The Palace of Versailles was created at the instruction of Louis XIV, and was the centre of French government and power from 1682, when Louis XIV moved from Paris, until Louis XVI and the royal family was forced to return to the capital in 1789.
The chateau is built around a hunting lodge established by by Louis XIII, and was created in four phases: 1664–68, 1669–72, 1678–84 and 1699–1710, by the architects Le Vau, Le Nôtre, and Le Brun.
Grand kitchen castle interior, for that time very modern equiped. The kitchen is opposite the dining room, but communicates with the buffet on the ground floor through the longitudinal corridor. Two lateral corridors were added in 1659 on the orders of Vatel, then head waiter of Nicolas Fouquet.
The basement is partly buried, which allows the establishment of a massed plan. A longitudinal corridor crosses the basement, occupied by the kitchens, pantries and officers' rooms..

Kraus. In the interwar period, the Polish embassy was located in the palace (1922–1934).
In 1992, it was declared a national cultural monument together with the Old Town Square.

Taken walking around the Centro Storico on one of the prettiest Sundays I ever remember.
Sant'Antonio dei Portoghesi - a quick glance didn't turn up the architect's name, but I"m sure that will come around eventually.
Service buildings in brick and stone flanking the avant-cour. Vaux-le-Vicomte was originally planned to be constructed in brick and stone, but after the mid-century, as the middle classes began to imitate this style, aristocratic circles began using stone exclusively. Rather late in the design process, Fouquet and Le Vau switched to stone.

Visit to the Austrian National Library on Wednesday May 21st, 2025 during the Joint Meeting Vienna. We went as a group before our gala dinner. The library in German is Österreichische Nationalbibliothek and is located at Josefsplatz 1, 1015 Wien. This is truly one of the most stunning libraries I have ever visited. The public area is the State Hall, built in the Baroque style in the 18th century by Emperor Charles the VI whose statue sits in the middle of the space.
The Hermitage, Baroque in style, was the one-time palace of the tsars, founded by Catherine the Great in 1764.

I heard music while I was taking pictures. The songs sounded familiar, but I thought, "No, it can't be them, what would they be doing here in Zacatecas?"
Lo and behold, my favorite Spanish duo, in Zacatecas, randomly giving a free concert. I tried SO MANY times to see them in concert in Spain. I even paid for a ticket to see them once in Salamanca and the concert got cancelled because they got sick or something.
This was fab. :)

July 4, 2023 - "Built on top of Mount St. Stephen (Monte de Santo Estêvão), between the 18th and 20th centuries, this Marian shrine is visited by pilgrims from all over the country - especially on September 8, the day of the Nativity of the Virgin and the high point of the feasts in honour of Our Lady of Remedies, which usually include fireworks, musical shows and various sports and recreational activities amidst the dense grove of the pleasant Santo Estêvão Park. The Procession of the Triumph, with its richly adorned paraders, is a highpoint.
Already during the Middle Ages catholic worship was celebrated there, in an old hermitage dedicated to Santo Estevão that was erected in 1361. At risk of collapsing, it was demolished in the 16th century and the construction of a new hermitage in the same spot was started, by the Bishop of Lamego, where an image of the Virgin and Child was placed. Worship of St. Stephen was thus progressively replaced by Marian Devotion. In 1750, the construction of the present sanctuary began, and was only finished in 1905.
The monumental Baroque staircase (with 686 steps) that gives access to the sanctuary is divided over several levels, punctuated by sculptural elements, such as statues of the kings, the backrests of the eight fountains (among which the Remédios, by Nicolau Nasoni) and various allegorical representations. Half way is the Chapel of Desterro.
Inside the temple is Rocaille in style and entirely dedicated to Marian iconography: on the main altar in gilded carving, in the altarpieces dedicated to the Virgin's parents, in the three stained glass windows with images of Our Lady of the Conception, the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Annunciation, and in the tiles of the Conimbrigan artist Miguel Costa that represent key moments in Mary’s life.
The tomb of the founder of the sanctuary, Canon Jose Teixeira Pinto, is at the entrance of the nave." Previous description: www.visitportugal.com/en/node/134774
