April 29, 2022 - The Renaissance Koepelkerk (1668-1671) began its life as the Ronde Lutherse Kerk (Round Lutheran Church) designed by architect Adriaan Dortsman. It is now used for weddings, receptions, conferences and other events associated with the Renaissance Amsterdam Hotel.

"Standing elegantly on the banks of Singel, the canal that formed the outer boundary of Amsterdam in the middle ages is the Ronde Lutherse Kerk. The Ronde Lutherse Kerk once served as a church for the Lutheran order but today is taken over by the Renaissance Amsterdam Hotel.

Built in the latter half of the seventeenth century, the Church was built to replace the Oude Lutherse Kerk (Old Lutheran Church) on Spui. The Ronde Lutherese Kerk is one of the few domed Protestant churches in Netherlands. The distinctive copper dome on the church is noticed from anywhere in the Spui. The unique exterior done in a brilliant Renaissance style was designed by Adrian Dortsman. Although built with grandeur and style, the Church endured many changes along the years. In 1882, the Church had to undergo serious remodeling and renovation because of the damage caused by fire. Over the years the Church’s congregation decreased tremendously which led to its conversion to a concert hall after another fire damaged the structure in 1993. Ironically, the Old Lutheran Church on Spui which was to be replaced by the Ronde Lutherse Kerk is still an active protestant Church.

Today this beautiful monument is not open to public but on request, one can get the opportunity to admire the splendor of the interiors of the Ronde Lutherse Kerk." Previous description from the following website: www.gpsmycity.com/attractions/ronde-lutherse-kerk-6232.html

Chiesa dei Gesuiti, (the church of Santa Maria Assunta), a Catholic church with baroque architecture, frescoes & prominent works of art. In the Cannaregio region of Venice, Veneto, Italy.

The construction of the church was financed by by Cleto Gussoni in 1148 and was surrounded by grounds, bodies of water and wetlands. In 1154 Cleto turned it into a hospital for the poor who were ill, both men and women. Another Gussoni, by the name of Buonavere, relative and heir of Cleto, ultimately provided vineyards and some of his other estates in the districts of Chioggia and Pellestrina. In the monastery of I Gesuiti a member of the same family, Marco Gussoni, took his vows, miraculously cured by the then Blessed, later Saint Luigi Gonzaga. It is said that in 1601 Marco, struck down by a grave illness, was healed instantly on the invocation by the saint. However, on 1 August 1631 he contracted the plague and died in Ferrara whilst working to help the plague victims there; he became known as "uomo di somma pietà" (man of supreme mercy). A portrait of him entitled Marco Gussoni blessing the plague victims at the Lazzaretto of Ferrara is exhibited in Ca' Rezzonico.

Saint Ignatius of Loyola visited the city of Venice for the first time in 1523 to embark on a pilgrimage to Jerusalem. He returned to I Gesuiti in 1535 with a group of friends, who already called themselves the Society of Jesus (members of which are referred to as Jesuits - Gesuiti in Italian), and here they were ordained as priests. It took just two years for the group to fully establish themselves in the lagoon of Venice and to gain a large following. They left for Rome in 1537.

In 1606, due to the quarrels between Pope Paul V and Venice, the city was placed under interdiction, and as a consequence, the Jesuits were exiled until 1657. During these years, Venice was involved in a consuming war with the Ottoman Empire and Pope Alexander VIII decided to provide the services of the Betlemitani, an order created to assist the Knights of the Cross who were under the control of this pope.

Venice then sold the whole estate to the Jesuits, including a church, a hospital and a convent, for fifty-thousand ducats. However, the Betlemitani church was not large enough for the Jesuits. So in 1715 they knocked it down and built their own temple. The church was given the name of Santa Maria Assunta (Mary after Assumption). It was financed by the Manin family; an aristocratic Friulan family from 1651. The church was consecrated in 1728.

Cannaregio is the northernmost of the six historic sestieri (districts) of Venice. It is the second largest sestiere by land area and the largest by population, with 13,169 people as of 2007. Isola di San Michele, the historic cemetery island, is associated with the district.

The idea to erect the church belongs to the Russian Empress Elizabeth Petrovna inside her summer residence in Kiev.

OUR LADY OF THE ABANDONED IMAGE, STA. ANA CHURCH, MANILA

(Excerpt from www.nationalmuseum.gov.ph/2021/10/28/built-heritage-tradi....)

Located in a declared and protected Heritage Zone in the district of Sta. Ana in Manila City, the parish church tracing its origins to the 1500s is also notable for being site and setting of two declared National Cultural Treasures of the country, the Camarin dela Virgen and the Sta. Ana Site Museum. The Parish Church is a significant example of enduring architectural and cultural Filipino heritage.

The Sta. Ana Church is a Spanish colonial period church. Its site was established by the Spanish Franciscan Missionaries in 1578, in the first settlement established outside of Intramuros. Originally of nipa and bamboo make, construction of a larger church in stone begun around 1720 and finished in 1725 upon the direction of then parish priest, Fr. Vicente Ingles. In time, the church became known as Our Lady of the Abandoned Parish, as it also houses the centuries old and miraculous image of Nuestra Señora de los Desamparados, which was brought by Fr. Ingles from Spain.

Over the centuries, Sta. Ana church has suffered the inclemency of tropical weather and has survived major earthquakes. Fortunately, it was saved from World War II, while the rest of Manila burned down, the town and the church stood unscathed. In 1977, major restoration was undertaken by the National Artist Juan F. Nakpil with the assistance of Engineer Arturo Mañalac to bring out the church’s original appearance for the town of Sta. Ana’s 400th anniversary.

The dome, transepts and choir of the Duomo in Bergamo, Italy

Standing proudly across from São Bento Station, the Igreja de Santo António dos Congregados is one of Porto’s most photographed façades — and it’s easy to see why. Completed in the late 17th century, this church blends Baroque architecture with a stunning early 20th-century addition: a façade covered in iconic blue-and-white azulejos. The tiles, added by artist Jorge Colaço in 1929, narrate moments from the life of St. Anthony, the church’s patron saint, and radiate in the midday sun against the bustle of Avenida de Almeida Garrett. Street life here is constant — a mix of locals, tourists, taxis, and buskers — making the church both a spiritual and urban landmark. It’s a reminder that Porto’s azulejo tradition is not confined to quiet cloisters but woven right into the city’s busiest crossroads. Have you stopped here before climbing the steps to São Bento?

After a very long time, my dream of visiting Barasoain Church came true (since I see this place on the back of NDS 10-Peso Bill). Setting my foot on the church (coincidentally happened on June 12, 2021 which was the 123rd Philippine Independence Day) is a big step for me to know more about my Bulaceño roots.

ABOUT BARASOAIN CHURCH

Came from the phrase "Baras ng Suwail" (Dungeon of the Defiant), Barasoain once became an independent town in 1859 splitting itself from Malolos. Since Alejandro Valenzuela was the first Gobernadorcillo of the town, Barasoain needs to build their government headquarters, and a town church. Barasoain Church began as a chapel established by the Augustinian missionaries and Fr. Fray F. Arriola served as the town's parish priest. However, the first structure was a nipa hut situated in today's site of the present church. In 1862, through the collected funds, the church was constructed out of the stones and bricks. After years of construction (1885-1888), Barasoain Church was formally blessed and dedicated to Our Lady of Mount Carmel. The Baroque-inspired church was designed by Miguel Magpayo and the construction was initiated by Fr. Juan Giron.

Barasoain Church played a big role not only to Philippine Revolution of 1896, but to the establishment of the First Philippine Republic. It was the place where the Malolos Congress (in which Philippine Constitution of 1899 or simply Malolos Constitution was made), and the First Philippine Republic (where Gen. Emilio Aguinaldo was sworn into office as First Philippine President) was formally inaugurated on September 15, 1898 at January 23, 1899 respectively. In 1973, Barasoain Church was proclaimed by Former President Ferdinand Marcos as one of the National Shrines in the Philippines via Presidential Decree 260, and a museum was opened by National Historical Commission of the Philippines. Since 1989 to present, Barasoain Church undergo renovations for the church to go back to its near-original Baroque design.

Also in lieu of Philippine Centennial in 1998, Former President Joseph Estrada took his oath in the main altar of Barasoain Church to commemorate the historical struggle of the Filipinos towards independence from Spain.

IMUS CATHEDRAL

Architecture: Baroque Architecture (patterned after the fifth structure of Manila Cathedral)

Quoted from www.thebackpackadventures.com/2018/05/cavite-imus-cathedr...

"Also known as the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Pillar, Imus Cathedral started out as a small chapel-of-ease in Barangay Toclong in Cavite Viejo (now Kawit). It was under the supervision of the Augustinian Recollects who, in 1774, would petition the Spanish government to convert Imus into an independent municipality. However, it was only in 1795 that Imus was finally separated from Cavite el Viejo. With this, a provisional church was established in an area known as Barangay Bayan Luma."

St Paul's Cathedral is an Anglican cathedral in London, United Kingdom, which, as the cathedral of the Bishop of London, serves as the mother church of the Diocese of London. It sits on Ludgate Hill at the highest point of the City of London and is a Grade I listed building. Its dedication to Paul the Apostle dates back to the original church on this site, founded in AD 604. The present cathedral, dating from the late 17th century, was designed in the English Baroque style by Sir Christopher Wren.
