knox and i will always have our differences when it comes to art. weve spent countless hours online or over dinner and drinks, arguing about our own perceptions with whats beautiful or not.
often times, she would point out that i need to explore other styles and be more adventureous. on the other hand i would argue that i like playing it simple and minimalistic. and more often than not i would flare up and be annoyed as hell.
but despite these differences, her opinion has always mattered to me, even if we disagree with our ideas and executions 75% of the time. because even if i disagree, she makes me think, and when i think i always find something new. and thats a good thing.
so here we have is one of those odd things that we did agree on: Knox in a traditional Barong Tagalog, which is like a tux custom made for the tropics. its so tropical, its made of pineapple and abaca fibers.
awyeah.
check out knoxie's blog. read up on philippine culture and leave a comment to show your love =)
Hark! The merry chimes are pealing,
Soft and glad the music swells,
Gaily in the night wind stealing,
Sweetly sound the wedding bells.

*I chanced upon the bride and groom in a photo shoot at the front yard of the Fort Ilocandia (where Irene Marcos, daughter of former President Ferdinand Marcos, and Gregorio Araneta III had their lavish wedding reception in 1983). I couldn't resist the paparazzi in me : )

Once again the team at ”We’re Here!” has been enlisted to save the world – this time from the Terror of the Autons.
Anyone who has watched Dr. Who (and you have, of course) knows about the evil Nestene Consciousness, which has attacked humanity many times using its living plastic foot-soldiers. I have reported this one to the proper authorities just this evening. It was spotted in the Barong Tagalog shop next to the Asian supermarket where I shopped for dinner. Watch out – they lurk everywhere!
Today, 28 September, is the feast of my patron saint, Lawrence Ruiz of Manila, protomartyr of the Philippines. This statue of the saint is in the church named after him in Navotas, Manila where I worked for a year.
My sermon for today, which includes some details of the saint's life and death, can be read here.

Few more days and he will be graduating from grade school and he'll be going to the big school. I am so excited to see him walk down the red carpet and receive his diploma. I am so proud of him & so grateful to be his father.

This can be said for many countries in Asia, but for us Filipinos, it is a true statement. The Filipino culture features great diversity in both linguistic, culinary and cultural aspects that gives each part of this country its own identity. For example, the Philippines has been home to some of the most celebrated names in art history such as Fernando Amorsolo (whose works are on display at the National Museum), Guillermo Tolentino (the famous poet) and even Agamemnon Pantaleon (the first South Asian national who opened an account while working in our country). All these may not have ventured into fashion but they all contribute to our highly recognized cultural identity which is the famous Filipiniana worn gloriously by Mrs. Imelda Marcos back in the day.
For centuries, the Barong Tagalog has been the signature traditional outfit of Filipino men. But time has passed, and this national attire has already evolved.
It has always been the Barong Tagalog for men and Baro’t Saya for women in the past. However, the current generation values self-expression and freedom in all aspects of their life. Just as how this traditional clothing speaks a lot about the Philippines’ history, the current trend with the barong also tells the present era’s story. And if there is something that people nowadays have been giving more significance to than in past generations, it would be diversity and acceptance. barongtagalog.us/the-evolution-of-the-traditional-barong-...
When it comes to modern day dressing, we’ve all come to love the Western fashion’s type of things to wear such as crop tops, jeans and blazers. But as Filipinos, we also have our own ways to highlight our local heritage and integrate it into today’s modern fashion. We all know that a Filipiniana is a decades old fashion inherited by the Philippines from the Spaniards, but today’s generation has come up with ways to freshen up the history a bit – all for the name of fashion. barongsrus.com/ways-to-wear-modern-filipiniana-outfits/

Marcos' barong tagalog (formal Filipino dress shirt).
Malacanan Palace (Malacanang) was the official residence of many Philippine presidents, and before them, the Spanish and American governor-generals. Ferdinand Marcos - who lived here for 20 years - was the longest-staying leader; and yes, this is where Imelda had her 3,000 shoes! The Palace is now a museum. The shoes are at the Shoe Museum in the City of Marikina, part of Metropolitan Manila.

Clothes make the man. This old adage still holds true today. By carefully selecting the cut, trim, fabric, and colors that we wear, we create a visual message telling the world who we are. And when it comes to formal wear, most men turn to suit jackets in order to say that they mean business. It is a predictable, and safe choice. But we are not most men. And nothing instantly tells the room that you are a cut above the rest by literally wearing it, in the form of a well-chosen barong that is.
The barong is traditional formal wear; it is lighter and at times, more colorful, than the traditional “power colors” of suits. It is fashionable, unique, and eye-catching. Wearing a distinct style of fashion when everyone else is wearing a variation of the typical suit is not a common choice to make. But here’s several great reasons why you may want to make that choice as well. barongtagalog.us/why-wear-a-barong-instead-of-a-suit-jacket/
