If a tree is already generally fallen, then one stands with great astonishment in front of these giants, which can live up to 1.500 years. Africans say that God was angry, tore the trees out of the earth and stamped them back into the earth with their roots pointing upwards.
The cluster of millennia-old baobab trees in the Nxai Pan National Park in Botswana owes its name to the man known to have discovered them. Thomas Baines, artist and fellow explorer to John Chapman, captured in paint the scene in 1862 on a trip through the expansive salt pans, en route to the Victoria Falls. Baines’ Baobabs, as they are known today, are a sight sought by many travellers venturing into the untamed terrain of Botswana.
Baobabs are trees recognisable by their distinctive swollen stems where they store massive amounts of water to cope with seasonal droughts. The tree's fruits are large pods known as 'monkey bread' or 'cream of tartar fruit' and very rich in vitamin C. (Kruger National Park, RSA).
