Taken on Saturday, 2/27/21. Neon sign turned off on March 1st and will be replaced with LED. The new LED sign won't go on till 4th of July.

When I ventured inside this streetcar, it was evident that someone was living in there. A little further up the tracks I met John, I assume that he was the occupant.

This is my first oriole of the year. Always a pleasure to see one.

Two more weekend butterflies today, this one a secretive species that generally likes to stay low and out of view, and, to the right, an Atlantis Fritillary, a species whose members almost cannot be missed when nearby.

Unlike robins and many other fruit-eating birds, Baltimore Orioles seem to prefer only ripe, dark-colored fruit. Orioles seek out the darkest mulberries, the reddest cherries, and the deepest-purple grapes, and will ignore green grapes and yellow cherries even if they are ripe.

Taken at Rondeau Provincial Park.

Baltimore Oriole - probably female. Photo taken in my backyard.

Backyard

We have a few Baltimore Orioles coming to our backyard this year. They keep coming almost daily which is a treat for us. They now feel somewhat comfortable with us sitting on the deck and they will perch in our taller cedars to watch us before they go to the feeder. The name for these birds apparently comes from the resemblance to the black and orange colors of Lord Baltimore’s coat of arms. Eventually, most of the birds will be renamed in the next few years. That is the plan. I wonder what name he will have next.

It appears this house finch is napping :)

Captured this afternoon as the sun was about to set here in Baltimore.

View of downtown Baltimore during a recent plane ride at low altitude. I have identified some of the sights, as you can see north to Towson, Maryland.

Evening falls and the moon rises over the Baltimore Inner Harbor. In frame here is the National Aquarium, the Baltimore World Trade Center, Power Plant, Lightship Chesapeake, and more. On this night we watched a Christmas parade of boats sail from Fells Point arround the Inner Harbor and back.

National Aquarium in Baltimore. (11/25/2022)

I had several orchard and baltimore orioles nesting in my yard last summer and today this handsome fellow arrived for the summer!

During the restoration of the Basilica in the early 2000s, they cleared out the undercroft area that was filled in with dirt, placed art & statuary in the various recesses and created a small chapel. The architecture and craftmanship is amazing.

Capture of the two interstate routes as they tunnel under the Baltimore Harbor. I-896 is to the left and the older tunnel, and I-95 is to the right.

The coal piles, Harbor Tunnel, and train tracks there were in the movie Enemy of the State.

You can also see Fort McHenry there on the other side of the harbor.

Capture made while in a Cessna.
