The monument, 227 steps to the top, was designed by Robert Mills, the nation's first native-born architect. Decades later, he designed the Washington Monument in Washington, D.C. The cornerstone of the Baltimore monument was laid on July 4, 1815. It was the first public monument to honor George Washington.

The National Aquarium in Baltimore, at 501 East Pratt Street on Pier 3 of the Inner Harbor, is the most visited attraction in Maryland, with an an annual attendance of 1.6 million to see its collection of approximately 16,500 specimens and more than 660 species of animals. The aquarium, which opened in 1981, consists of three buildings joined by a single enclosed walkway/bridge. The larger building, Pier 3 Pavilion, designed by Massachusetts-based Cambridge Seven Associates, Inc., under the architectural direction of Peter Chermayeff, contains the main gallery, which overlooks a the Wings on Water, a large pool occupied by rays, tarpon, and a green sea turtle. The gallery begins with a series of upward spiraling floors connected by long escalators, featuring fish from Maryland, up to a rainforest habitat inside a 64-foot high glass pyramid. A downward spiral exits back to the main gallery, surrounded by an Atlantic Coral Reef exhibit and a shark tank. The smaller building, Pier 4 Pavilion, was added in 1990, and features dolphinarium and temporary exhibit space. A multimillion dollar renovation and expansion in 2005, led by Bobby C. Poole at Chermayeff, Sollohub & Poole, added the Glass Pavilion, which features Animal Planet Australia, a large-walk-in aviary representing a river gorge in Australia.

Upon further inspection of this route, I realized that it is nowhere near a straight east to west approach from NY to CHI. This route dips as far south as far south as White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia, and includes 11 states, with cities such as New York City, Newark NJ, Philadelphia, Wilmington DE, Baltimore (shown), Washington, Charleston WV, Cincinnati, Indianapolis, and finally Chicago, as well as other numerous towns and small cities. Fun fact: This entire excursion will involve 15 states.
