l framed this shot of a red full moon rising at the Ashland Balloon Festival. Some of the balloon handlers appear to be spectators of the moon. This image turned out to be a unique blend of man and nature. A bit surreal...hope you enjoy it. Tell me what you think.

A shot from the archives from the Balloons Over Bavaria festival last May in Frankenmuth, Michigan. It’s a treat to watch the hot air balloons being inflated at dusk for the “Balloon Glow” event held on each evening of the festival.

Another shot from the "Balloon Glow" event at the Balloons Over Bavaria festival that I attended in Frankenmuth, Michigan, earlier this season. Hot air balloons are inflated at dusk, and as darkness falls, spectators are treated to the sight of a field filled with tethered balloons that glow as the crews fire them up. In this scene, one crew is obviously a bit ahead of the other in inflating its balloon and getting it upright.

Happy Cliche Saturday, everyone!

Flickr friends, after Saturday, I will be taking a few days away from Flickr for some summer R&R. See you when I return.

At the Balloon-Glow. The light inside the balloons really gave them a different appearance in contrast to the night. Enjoy.

The "All-Burn"... truly an amazing thing to see in person... I don't think there is any picture ever that could capture how truly amazing it is... but I do try.

On another note, I've gotten pretty good at getting these shots handheld!

it seems that the balloons are competing for attention w/ the sunset here.

Kevin and I decided to go to the STL Balloon glow this evening. I've been once before and it was quite overwhelming. It was still overwhelming this year, although I handled it better, but they didn't allow people to get up close this year (at least not while we were there.) I'm still surprised at how popular this event is sometimes.

The 27th annual Macomb Balloon Rally concluded last night. It was held at the Vince Grady Field on the campus of Western Illinois University. Over 30 balloonists participated.

There was an attempted fly-in in the evening, but I think the wind changed between the time the balloonists left the field and attempted the to fly back. Then, at 7:30, the balloons were positioned around the field and inflated in preparation for the popular "balloon glow." A horn sounded periodically, and all of the the balloonists simultaneously shot flames into their balloon envelopes... causing them to light up.

This is one of the last shots I took during the event. The balloon glow had ended, and it seemed that a few balloonists were keeping their envelopes inflated until others could be folded up and removed from the field.

It was somewhat of a challenge photographing in the low light and dark. This was shot with a high ISO of 2000 (which accounts for noise in the image). I learned a couple of things while shooting the event... next year, I am going to use my remote shutter release instead of using a 2-second delay when the camera was mounted on a tripod during the balloon glow (although this was shot without a tripod). I also want to shoot takeoffs and landings during the morning when there is some ambient light.

St. Louis is an independent city and inland port in the U.S. state of Missouri. It is situated along the western bank of the Mississippi River, which marks Missouri's border with Illinois. The Missouri River merges with the Mississippi River just north of the city. These two rivers combined form the fourth longest river system in the world. The city had an estimated 2017 population of 308,626 and is the cultural and economic center of the St. Louis metropolitan area (home to nearly 3,000,000 people), which is the largest metropolitan area in Missouri, the second-largest in Illinois (after Chicago), and the 22nd-largest in the United States.

Before European settlement, the area was a regional center of Native American Mississippian culture. The city of St. Louis was founded in 1764 by French fur traders Pierre Laclède and Auguste Chouteau, and named after Louis IX of France. In 1764, following France's defeat in the Seven Years' War, the area was ceded to Spain and retroceded back to France in 1800. In 1803, the United States acquired the territory as part of the Louisiana Purchase. During the 19th century, St. Louis became a major port on the Mississippi River; at the time of the 1870 Census it was the fourth-largest city in the country. It separated from St. Louis County in 1877, becoming an independent city and limiting its own political boundaries. In 1904, it hosted the Louisiana Purchase Exposition and the Summer Olympics.

The economy of metropolitan St. Louis relies on service, manufacturing, trade, transportation of goods, and tourism. Its metro area is home to major corporations, including Anheuser-Busch, Express Scripts, Centene, Boeing Defense, Emerson, Energizer, Panera, Enterprise, Peabody Energy, Ameren, Post Holdings, Monsanto, Edward Jones, Go Jet, Purina and Sigma-Aldrich. Nine of the ten Fortune 500 companies based in Missouri are located within the St. Louis metropolitan area. The city has also become known for its growing medical, pharmaceutical, and research presence due to institutions such as Washington University in St. Louis and Barnes-Jewish Hospital. St. Louis has two professional sports teams: the St. Louis Cardinals of Major League Baseball and the St. Louis Blues of the National Hockey League. One of the city's iconic sights is the 630-foot (192 m) tall Gateway Arch in the downtown area.

Forest Park is a public park in western St. Louis, Missouri. It is a prominent civic center and covers 1,326 acres (5.37 km2). Opened in 1876, more than a decade after its proposal, the park has hosted several significant events, including the Louisiana Purchase Exposition of 1904 and the 1904 Summer Olympics. Bounded by Washington University in St. Louis, Skinker Boulevard, Lindell Boulevard, Kingshighway Boulevard, and Oakland Avenue, it is known as the "Heart of St. Louis" and features a variety of attractions, including the St. Louis Zoo, the St. Louis Art Museum, the Missouri History Museum, and the St. Louis Science Center.

Since the early 2000s, it has carried out a $100 million restoration through a public-private partnership aided by its Master Plan. Changes have extended to improving landscaping and habitat as well. The park's acreage includes meadows and trees and a variety of ponds, manmade lakes, and freshwater streams. For several years, the park has been restoring prairie and wetlands areas of the park. It has reduced flooding and attracted a much greater variety of birds and wildlife, which have settled in the new natural habitats.

I decided to not carry around my tripod this year since in previous years I didn't really use it... I did pretty good.... better than last year anyway. =)

The Balloon Glow on Saturday nights is one of the best parts. They'll do an "ALL BURN" where they all fire up at the same time. Then they'll do a "TWINKLE" where they all do fire bursts and it looks like twinkling Christmas lights.

Each year Marion County, Kentucky celebrates Ham Days. Earlier in the day, there was a parade, the Pigasis Parade.

That evening, there was a balloon glow, where hot air balloons light up at night without racing through the sky. The flying pig pictured here is one of the more popular balloons. Families come from all around the county come to see and participate in the festivities.

Last September 11th, I went to the Festival of Flight in Lutz, Florida. I love hot air balloons and when I lived in Pennsylvania, I was delighted every time I saw one floating over my home. None have floated over my home here in Florida -- yet -- but I am hopeful one will, since there is an airport near here!
