Indiana Railroad SD40-2 40 finds a sliver of light among the tree tunnels on the former Illinois Central line west of Linton back in 2009.

The sharp looking SD40-2 was built for the Burlington Northern as their 7235 in 1980 and has since been renumbered as INRD 4006.

After rain the green came back.

"Can't Get There From Here"

Living in the backwoods,

far from your reality.....

but at least I'm having a good fukin` time.

While the air ain't much cleaner,

well the trees a little greener

and the road don't go with your style~

What a gorgeous area of this world; so peaceful and serene.

Despite the recent influx of ex-NS GP38-2s, SD-Ms from former US Steel roads still work for the Chesapeake & Indiana Railroad.

Here at the outdoor "shop" at La Crosse, Indiana, former DM&IR 813 receives some attention while ex-EJ&E 818 rests in the shade, waiting for new parts.

We survived the historic rain/snow storm of 2023 with only several leaks that need to be repaired but we ended up with a rainbow shining over us. Thank you mom and dad for the sign of encouragement.

MR 1323 drags a string of empty gondolas down the snow-covered jointed rail lining the woods of the Upper Peninsula. About one mile from the destination of the Humboldt Mill, the Conductor will spot these empties for the mill and grab loads of copper and nickel concentrate for interchange to the CN at Ishpeming, Michigan.

Just south of Ishpeming Michigan, Mineral Range 1300 shoves a cut of tank cars back into Dyno Noble.

A square-cabed Geep trundles down the overgrown spur to WCO Enterprises to retrieve an empty wax car off of CSX's now decommissioned Export yard. With the adoption of precision scheduled railroading, all jobs from Export yard are now originating from Moncrief and have been consolidated into fewer and fewer locals. The customers around Export yard largely remain. Portside Paper has vacated its space and moved to a different warehouse up the line, still receiving cars at its new location. Manson Construction's service ended after enough rock for the St. johns dredging project was delivered. Owens Corning had discontinued limestone deliveries a few years ago but still gets asphalt service. Steelcon Supply hasn't gotten a car in a few months to a year but continues to be in business it appears. That leaves Export yard with WCO (pictured here), Jones Chemicals, a Crowley transload (tomato paste boxcars), Owens Corning (asphalt only), Lehigh Cement, and potentially but not certainly the occasional service to Steelcon Supply.

Below are some photos of the customers that have disappeared:

Owens Corning Roofing, switched to trucks at several facilities across the US with limestone shipments:

Steelcon Supply, may or may not get service still - hasn't gotten a car in months:

Manson Construction, reactived its spur for about a year to receive rock for dredging project:

This shot works best on a cloudy day with flat light but I really wanted to try it since it is one of my favorites on the line. The bucolic backwoods country branchline feel just speaks to me and I knew that a vintage high hood first generation geep would be the cherry on top of this scene from another era.

After wrapping up their work in Ware, Mass Central Railroad job PA-2 is headed back toward Gibbs for more work before heading down to Palmer to deliver their outbound traffic to CSXT's yard. MCER GP9 1749 (ex CO 6199 blt. Dec. 1956) and GP38-2 1751 (ex PC 7997 blt. Jun. 1972) are dressed in a sharp scheme that mirrors the original Boston and Maine bluebird colors debuted on their GP9 order of 1957. The pair are rolling south near MP 9.7 on the old Boston and Albany Ware River branch as they cross dead end Malbeuf Road still guarded by an old school St. Andrew's cross style crossbuck at right.

"A world without huge regions of total wilderness would be a cage." ~Edward Abbey

Wednesday I took a hike along pine creek behind the cabin. The snow melt in NW Montana has been phenomenal, with rivers and creeks reaching near flood stage. I got to this area only by first fighting my way through the brush and then getting my sneakers a little wet. Very quite and lots of nature! Fallen trees, light green skunk cabbage plants and the over flowing creek behind.

My body is back in the big city but my mind is still in Montana...

Taking a break from India to visit some third world nations closer to home. CSX C491 eases through the small Kentucky village of Verne on its way to the Gatliff loadout in Nevisdale.

I woke up at 5am this morning. i couldn't get back to sleep. So…. I went out looking for a new photo. This is what I found. I hope you like it.

The Interstate Heritage leads some hot intermodal traffic past the GRS Type-D intermediates in Bessemer City, these sets of signals are among the last few locations of Southern-era signals along the Piedmont Division.

I'll take the oddball move for a few images every time.
