This completes the current Bison set - moving backward from old age to fresh and new (although people coming late to these three pics will see them in reverse order of uploading - which, of course, is the normal progression of any creature through life).

Every winter I see a few red calves, indicating later than usual births. Bison calves are red at birth; the coat gradually turns darker as they grow up. Although they must be extremely vulnerable at this stage, they have a fearsome mother to nurture and protect them, and - very important - in this park, no predators. In some places, wolves or grizzlies will take down a bison when they can; here, the apex predator is the coyote, an animal much too small for that dangerous task. I've found several dead bison over the years, and they were all mature bulls that died shortly after the midsummer rut, suggesting they were gored and fatally injured in a fight for the right to mate.

The herd I was watching this day had at least three red calves, all of them cute as can be.

Take a look backward, go ahead. You may be amazed at how clear the picture is. Wouldn't it be nice to be able to see so clearly into the future? I am sure there are things that I COULD have done differently, or maybe WOULD have done with a different attitude, or most certainly many times there were things that I just SHOULD have done, period. When we reflect on our lives, I think that most of us would do things differently with those we hold close to our heart. Both of my parents have passed on, but there are oh so many times that I would like to see them just one more time, to touch their hand, to tell them I love and appreciate them. Even though I did that quite often when they were still alive. I also recall the times that my young son would ask me to go fishing, and I might respond with something like: "maybe later, or some other time." Of course there were plenty of times when I would say "go get your pole," and he'd be off in a flash, but If I could recall those times, most certainly we would have went fishin' every time he asked, and believe me he asked quite often. So it would be pointless to live a life of regret, wishing that we had done things differently.

Back in the eighties the pop-rock group MIKE AND THE MECHANICS put a song on the charts for a few weeks entitled "The Living Years." www.youtube.com/watch?v=rZrN7kSVvoY Part of the lyrics said ♫Say it loud, say it clear, you can listen as well as you hear. It's too late when we die to admit we don't see eye to eye.♫ The writer of the song was looking back over his life and wishing that he would have had a closer relationship with his recently deceased father. He even went on to write later in the verse: ♫ I wasnt there that morning when my father passed away, I didnt get to tell him all the things I had to say, I think I caught his spirit later that same year, I'm sure I heard his echo in my babys new born tears, I just wish I could have told him in the living years.♫ So when you begin to reflect, don't let your past blur your vision, but let it improve your visual acuity of the future. My wife and I recently put our house on the market, placed all of our belongings in storage, left our friends and family and not only left town, or the state of Tennesse or even the country for that matter, we switched continents for cryin' out loud. We are now pastor/directors at the SHAPE International Christian Center for our armed forces in St. Denis, Belgium, and lovin' every minute of it. This is really a decision that I will not look on in the future and wish I had done things differently.

Let your self of yesterday walk the backward road to dwell in moments already lived. Let your tomorrow self walk ever forward to greet the unknown that beckons every searching heart. Let curiosity name your journey; she will never settle on just one.

I feel extraordinarily fortunate this new year to travel to NY, India and Thailand this month. I was gone for 3 1/2 weeks to see my exhibition opening and teach workshops. I'll lead 4 self-expression workshops to underprivileged communities while abroad and had many meetings with potential new partners to do more work in the same vein.

I feel, for those who are endowed with good fortune (be it physically or mentally, or as simple as having enough money, energy, resources, etc.) that it is the greatest privilege to share that with others. Every individual is bursting with such uniqueness and that unique quality is a gift. Please, I implore you - find your gift and give it to others. It is usually hiding in between what you love and what makes you different.

I am inspired beyond anything I've experienced thus far to be more innovative in how I give to others. This is my mission in life above all other missions. Thank you for listening as I share many facets of myself with you - my art, my heart, my flaws, my hopes. I am so grateful for this space.

A way forward...or backward?

Piri-Piri Burr / acaena novae-zelandiae. Suffolk. 28/06/18.

A close-up view of Piri-Piri Burr, a non-native problematic plant in the UK :-

*highly invasive

*widespread from S.England to S.Scotland

*favours coastal areas like dunes, sandy heathland/fields

*spreading inland increasingly

*forms dense mats smothering native plants

*has sharp, backward pointing barbs

*barbs attach easily to animal fur and bird feathers

*poses a serious threat to wildlife/threatened UK flora

*proven cases of injury or death of bird species

BEST VIEWED LARGE in order to see detail of the formidable white barbs on each flowerhead. A highly efficient method of seed dispersal by animals and birds......but often at an appalling cost to unsuspecting victims.

Just been disturbed by a parent and child getting just too close. Something that I saw quite a lot yesterday. Some parents stood on the edge of a group of deer just past the entrance whist two toddlers wandered amidst the deer. Are these people just crazy. Sorry rant over, we moved on!!!

American Avocets at Hecla Reservoir in Louisville, Colorado. These birds are beautiful!

wonderful to see a good few puffins on our boat excursion to smith island

We went into town today to meet up with a couple of friends who are here visiting. After lunch we decided to head home via Spanish Banks and enjoy a stroll in the sea air. It was perfect, a balmy 14°C with bright blue skies and the city skyline lit up with sunshine. Who could ask for more.

Chinese New Year is coming and I wish all my Flickr friends a happy and prosperous Year of Monkey!

There are so many arguments and discussions about democracy and election of Chief Executive in Hong Kong ever since Occupy Central movement came into sight.

Some argued that there has been no election of governor in the colonial rule in Hong Kong before 1997. The election now suggested by China is a step forward already. The question is: Is the voting on screened candidates a real democracy?

I believe if Hong Kong were under British rule today and similar kind of election framework being proposed, the Hong Kong people will still protest on it and will not accept it too.

We need a real step forward and not a step backward like what was happening in the colonial rule i.e. the leader in government was appointed and sent by another ruling authority.

This is not moving forward or backward in my picture. This is just Woodward's spiral stairs 4 October seen on the day of Doors Open Vancouver event.

Happy Sunday!

I have my best wishes for Occupy Central movement on the 7th day.

Coy backward glances... perhaps they're just not keen to be photographed. I worked quick and was very pleased to get this one. They are truly magnificent big birds and also happen to be the official bird of Uganda.

They live for up to 30 years in captivity; or around twenty in the wild. These, while "wild", have adapted well to farm life where I suspect they supplement their diet with cattle feed.

this shot was the backward glance after the morning of the lunar eclipse. I had no filters, (handheld) and the snow was diamond bright. The sweeps and curves were exciting and I took a few different formats, but this was the best I could get from trying the square, especially with the tide being low.

Also the first solo outing of the nikon d40. I would add it was by then -7degrees,I had been on the rocks since predawn and couldn't feel my fingers or limbs.

Hey, Flickr... I won't see you for a little while, so I'm leaving you with three of my absolute favorites from Switzerland. Here's the last... hope everyone has a great week!

Image made with my Nikon F100.

My spirits were lifted on 24 January 2017, with this sighting of a beautiful Barred Owl. I've barely been out looking for Snowy Owls and Short-eared Owls this winter and have only seen a few, very distant birds - at least until the 25 January 2017, when I was lucky enough to see 11 Snowy Owls outside the city, with a friend who is brilliant at spotting things. I've also missed a recent Long-eared Owl and a Northern Saw-whet Owl.

This was only the second 100% wild Barred Owl I’d ever seen. I had seen a family of them near Edmonton, when we went to see ones that had been banded. They were wild birds, but I still hoped to one day see a completely wild one (no nesting box). The owl in this photo was beautiful – crummy light, but I was so happy to see this owl. We very rarely see this species within the city, so it was a real treat. Took a long walk before seeing it, and it took me a few days to recover from it - but it was so worth it.

"The Barred Owl’s hooting call, “Who cooks for you? Who cooks for you-all?” is a classic sound of old forests and treed swamps. But this attractive owl, with soulful brown eyes and brown-and-white-striped plumage, can also pass completely unnoticed as it flies noiselessly through the dense canopy or snoozes on a tree limb. Originally a bird of the east, during the twentieth century it spread through the Pacific Northwest and southward into California." From AllAboutBirds.

macromonday's theme is upside down, backward or sideways.

Is it a burden or joy in labor? Is it backward or cultural uniqueness? Nothing is good or bad, thinking makes it so!

I am back with inspiration!(at least for this moment?) Sorry for such a drag since school started. I went through the worst depression today but at the end of the day, I feel much better, maybe the end for the whole depressing term?

PS: is the fact that I am going back to day#47 instead of day #53 right or wrong :P

Down, Forward, Upward, and Backward Experiment with Vertical Panorama on iPhone 7 Plus. It is overexposed in bright areas. I need to figure out how to use the HDR function on the camera using Photos software on the Mac. Or perhaps there is an app for the iPhone that will do the job.

Advice and suggestions are most enthusiasticaly welcome!!
