After a demo last week at the Club on adding a background, thought I would have a try?

Feathery type.

Callistephus is a genus of flowering plants in the aster family, Asteraceae, containing the single species Callistephus chinensis.

Its common names include China aster and annual aster.

It is native to China and Korea.

It is cultivated worldwide as an ornamental plant in cottage gardens and as a cut flower.

The Ship Inn nestled in the background of my photo dates back to 1567 when it was a customs house, before becoming a licensed hostelry in 1754. It was often visited by the young Scottish poet, Robert Burns, who lived in Irvine around 1781. Today it is modernised gastro-pub, famous for it’s steak pies.

It took a long time but it seems spring/summer has finally arrived in Bavaria, atleast in the valley. IC 2012 passes through Altstaeten with the Bavarian Alpas in the background. The train featured a unusual 1x1 arrangement rather than the normal arrangement of 2 of on the front, perhaps a new arrangement to eliminate the run around at Immenstadt.

The stairs are an excellent perspective training. They climb and spin towards the background of the image. This is creating an imbalance and naturally guiding the eye.

In a staircase it is better to watch where you put your feet.

In the photo, this reflex is repeated.

I took This man in a hurry, a little later also, when he crossed the door.

This cheap pack of pencils, still my favourites to write with... was brought into the studio, props for 'GOING BACK TO SCHOOL' advert, ahem... I also saw the possibilities of some 'creative' imagery, so I asked to keep them, more (useful) props.

I love the way this came together as a 'flower'.

Le canal Saint-Félix est un canal, dans lequel coulent les eaux de l'Erdre, avant que celle-ci ne se jette dans la Loire. Situé à Nantes, à l'est du château des Ducs, il a pris la place d'un des anciens bras de la Loire, le bras de la Bourse, lors des Comblements de Nantes. Il constitue aujourd'hui un port de plaisance non loin du centre-ville, avec un parking côté quai Malakoff.

En 1926, les travaux de comblement de nombreux bras de la Loire et de dérivation de l'Erdre commencent. Ainsi, de 1929 à 1933, on creuse le tunnel Saint-Félix, canal souterrain passant sous les cours Saint-Pierre et Saint-André, entre la préfecture et le canal Saint-Félix, destiné à dévier l'affluent, l'Erdre, de son cours naturel.

La construction d'un barrage et d'une écluse à sa sortie, pour maintenir son niveau, protège le canal contre le refoulement des eaux de la Loire avec la cote de + 10 m, soit 1 m au-dessus des inondations de 1910. Ces installations comprenant un sas d'écluse de 50 mètres de long pour 7 mètres de large, fermé par deux portes métalliques de 17 tonnes chacune, fut inaugurée le 5 avril 1934 après 3 ans de travaux

À partir de 1933, des travaux d'élargissement du quai Malakoff commencent. Ils incluent le comblement du canal de la Gare, et ont pour effet de diminuer la largeur du canal Saint-Félix. Ils sont stoppés en 1942 et repris après la guerre.

The Saint-Félix canal is a canal in which the waters of the Erdre flow, before it flows into the Loire. Located in Nantes, east of the castle of the Dukes, he took the place of one of the old arms of the Loire, the arm of the Exchange, during the Fillings of Nantes. It is now a marina not far from the city center, with parking side quay Malakoff.

In 1926, the work of filling many arms of the Loire and derivation of the Erdre began. Thus, from 1929 to 1933, the Saint-Félix tunnel was dug, an underground canal passing under the Saint-Pierre and Saint-André courtyards, between the prefecture and the Saint-Félix canal, intended to divert the tributary, the Erdre, of its natural course.

The construction of a dam and a lock at its exit, to maintain its level, protects the canal against the backflow of the Loire with the rating of + 10 m, 1 m above the floods of 1910. These facilities including a lock chamber 50 meters long and 7 meters wide, closed by two metal doors of 17 tons each, was inaugurated on April 5, 1934 after 3 years of work

From 1933, works to widen the Malakoff wharf begin. They include the filling of the Canal de la Gare, and have the effect of reducing the width of the Saint-Félix Canal. They were stopped in 1942 and resumed after the war.

I had some reasonable shots of a Kingfisher but they had a pretty uninspiring grey background due to a dull overcast day. So for the very first time I decided to find out how to change the background of the shot, this is the result not perfect by any means but more pleasing to the eye than grey. There is also a slight vignette, it's obviously not a natural background and I would always say if I had done this. Any thoughts ?

Seattle, Washington, USA.

(Technically, you’re viewing three different cities in this photo. From foreground to background: Bellevue, Mercer Island, and Seattle).

The title of this photograph is apropos because night time photography of urban landscapes, such as this, is often what sustains my equilibrium. I think some people call this their “happy space” or “happy place".

I think I have two happy spaces: 1) Photographing cities between sunset and nightfall while listening to tunes on my iPod; and 2) Hovering above cities in a doorless helicopter several hundred feet in the air, wind blowing around my body, while capturing the city below on camera. (Yes, I actually am completely at peace, even when there’s turbulence).

These are the two times I am at peace amidst all the pandemonium surrounding us in this world each day. This pandemonium only seems to intensify, so it’s paramount to have a personal moment to decompress and catch one’s breath.

I hope all of you have moments when you can be at peace, even if it’s for a short period of time.

I don't usually like to put up new versions of old images, but I've broken my rule in this case. The previous version didn't give a sense of the scale of the building: it was just a crop of the top. This version, I hope, better conveys the height.

Candid shot of a Capitol Hill Arts Workshop student in my Washington, D.C. photo class. Single dot focusing was on the rim of the student's lens but special attention was on the background, framing the subject in the doorway and using the photo of the wall to balance the image.
