Luckily there is a small nature reserve near me with good numbers of the purple orchids at this time of year....and a few bee orchids which are nice to see. Sadly a declining presence in our countryside but still a sight to lift the spirits. I try to add one or two meaningful pictures to my files each year but its not easy to get something a bit different. This was taken at 400mm which helps with background separation - something I've not tried before and the 100-400mm lens is quite close focusing so useful for close-ups.
I had some reasonable shots of a Kingfisher but they had a pretty uninspiring grey background due to a dull overcast day. So for the very first time I decided to find out how to change the background of the shot, this is the result not perfect by any means but more pleasing to the eye than grey. There is also a slight vignette, it's obviously not a natural background and I would always say if I had done this. Any thoughts ?
I don't usually like to put up new versions of old images, but I've broken my rule in this case. The previous version didn't give a sense of the scale of the building: it was just a crop of the top. This version, I hope, better conveys the height.

I've called him Punky from his peculiar "punk" dark crest. Here photographed in a macro on top of a real mirror in one of his first exits from the nest at the age of a lil less than 1 month.
Very satisfied just after the meal, he could not stand due to his full stomach.
Punky is a cockatiel of the Pearl variant.
Today it's his 2 months birthday! (Same as for my cinnamon cockatiel Sconsy).
At present his plumage is almost completed: black background completely dotted with white-yellow polka dots, just beautiful but, most of all, he is my hero, a braveheart warrior and in the next few shots I will tell his extraordinary story...

And the happy end: "The return of the prodigal son"
Up-date 2023: it's few months Punky is pairing with Francesco, an Albino cockatiel. Yesss Punky is female ! <3

The museum ship, USS Texas, built in 1915 is in the foreground. She is the last of the dreadnought class of ships built during that period.

Across the field is the San Jacinto Monument marking the site of the battle where the residents of Texas won their independence from the government of Mexico in 1836. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_San_Jacinto
In the far background, to the right of the monument, one can see the towers of the Fred Hartmann Bridge over 5 miles away.
Taken with a Nikon D300 and a 17-35 mm f/2.8 lens from a ship passing in the Houston Ship Channel.
Candid shot of a Capitol Hill Arts Workshop student in my Washington, D.C. photo class. Single dot focusing was on the rim of the student's lens but special attention was on the background, framing the subject in the doorway and using the photo of the wall to balance the image.
a typical Frankfurt view: The Römerberg with the christmas market and the replicated historical houses and in the background the Frankfurt dome.

This is a 1.5¨ U-bolt clamp with its saddle and nuts. It measures 2 3/8¨ in height. Many saddle variants exists. With the appropriate saddle installed it can be used on piping, with ropes, and in the automotive industry on the muffler system. Sometimes, having the right U-bolt clamp handy can save the day!
The background color comes from my Valentine’s day roses. Just a little feminine touch… 😉
