The pictures in my room are windows to my travels
Adding joy to my life and hopefully others
There are many stories to be told, especially of beautiful places
The joys of a path traveled with an old forest friend
Even memories of past trips with locations that look so much the same
Another work of short poetry or prose to complement the image captured one afternoon on the North Shore of Minnesota in Temperance River State Park with a view extending to the east across the waters of Lake Superior with wave after wave rushing to a nearby shoreline. In composing this image, I chose to include some of a nearby rocky outcropping as foreground interest to lead the eye into the image with the lake waters and then more distant shoreline with mostly cloudy skies as a backdrop.

Alaska Railroad's Glacier Discovery train is passing a pond near Girdwood Alaska on the trains return trip to Anchorage. The near by snow capped mountains behind the train providing a stunning backdrop for the passengers on their way north back to Anchorage.
The dead trees on the right side of the photo are remnants from the 9.3 Magnitude earthquake that rocked this area back in March of 1964 where this entire area sank as much as 8 feet. The sinking of the ground here allowed salt water from the near by Turnagain Arm to rush in and and essentially mummify the trees nearly instantly killing them and creating a petrified forest of sorts. The Alaska Railroad and the near by Seward Highway both had to be reengineered, reconstructed and raised above the new high tide mark, a process that took roughly 2 years following the earthquake to complete.
This earthquake, which is the strongest ever recorded on the North American Continent, changed much of the landscape of Southern Alaska, causing considerable damage, costing billions of dollars to repair, and responsible for taking the lives of 131 people. The effects of this 4 minute and 38 second event were felt all along the Western North American Coast, sent damaging Tsunamis as far as Hawaii and Japan, and could reportedly been felt as far east as Florida. But in a way this catastrophic event brought the communities of Alaska together as they all worked to rebuild.
Burnett Lane in " downtown" Brisbane runs between and parallel to the main thoroughfares of the Queen Street Mall and Adelaide Street. It is more or less a lane of discrete rear entrances for good delivery. It also features some interesting and varied street art with murals, tiny doors and this old wall that features much about the history of the man after whom the lane was named - James Charles Burnett.

With the terrace house of Haworth forming a fine backdrop he LNWR Coal Tank, 1054 is seen here in an early 90's view simmering in the yard at Howarth. These were of course the days when you could freely wonder around the yard.

. . . This quiet little town was our first overnight docking on our way from Seward AK headed south to Vancouver. This is Haines Alaska, and it seems the higher you live up the hillside, the larger your house has to be! Even the seagulls "heart" this place!
