This huge concert backdrop was recently on display at Gillette Stadium, where Kenny Chesney was rockin’ the stage for #NoShoesNation. This wall of heavy knit fabric measures a staggering 40′ H x 80′ W and required special fabrication so the curtain could be lifted like an accordion.

For years, Britten has been the behind-the-scenes manufacturer for custom stage & theatrical drapes for everything from the small stage to huge stadium backdrops. Who knows? You might’ve seen our work at the last concert you saw!

Abstract technology backdrop from steel bent metal sheet

Backdrop made from a single roll of wallpaper.

This is my home studio.

I have the computer for quick edits and remote tethering.

I have a lot more lighting also.

The backdrop is made from a single roll of 10m wallpaper. You can easily find odd rolls for a few pounds at your local DIY store.

Allowing for pattern matching, you can make 3x 3m strips of the wallpaper, match the pattern and using duck-tape, stick the strips together to make a backdrop.

For less than £1 you can by 2" diameter, 2.2 meter PVC pipe and attach it to that for storage.

This diorama represents the sleep out just before going into my 4th year at the U of C. Sleep out is one of those long gone traditions that holds many memories for me and something that I wish current undergrads could still share. The scene is set in front of Harper Library where the College Advisers offices were located. The sleep out was a campus wide party where everyone joined in the fun. I tried to include things that I remembered from my time there. Grilling food, although frowned upon, was necessary because you couldn’t leave the quad for fear of roll being called in your absence. I had my Peeps roasting marshmallows (which my kids thought hilarious if cannibalistic.) Some enterprising students ran power from Haskell to run the stereo and a TV! Kids played soccer and Frisbee, some slept, some waited in line to sign in. I even included a parrot as a homage to the parrot tree on 53rd.

It was general chaos. For the record, my Peeps are drinking root beer, since it is a campus event. I tried to include some of my favorite t-shirts from the era on the Peeps as well. If you look you will see a “Hell Does Freeze Over” shirt with a phoenix shivering on ice cubes instead of flames, a “Nobel Prize” winner shirt, an “Old Style” beer logo, a period White Sox logo shirt, several class of 1990 shirts for us seniors and a few AOII shirts representing me and my friends. (I’m the yellow Peep in the red shirt.) All that is missing are kids studying, which is perhaps why the sleep out was replaced with a more orderly process!

This is the same display as last year, although last year I hung product off the lines. I found it was a bit heavy and weighed down the clothes line, so this year I decided to print out some of my product shots instead.

People commented on my display all weekend and said the pictures looked great! I actually had a few people asking about my photography and one who wanted to buy one off the display!! LOL!! I was pretty pleased!
