Building the BackBlaze Mass Storage SAN to put in the www.RackWire.com

They are quite good to have. Ironically, in order to take this picture I was just haphazardly tossing around one of my external hard drives, but in my defense it's supposed to be a rugged one.

I finally have my files backed up in a manner that lets me feel secure. I have a Time Machine (OS X) backup of my laptop that continually backs up all my documents and photos. I'm also using Backblaze, a neat online backup service, to duplicate all of my files on a remote server. That way if my apartment burns down, I still have all of my photos saved off-site! Of course, I always have Flickr to fall back on, but it's nice to also have all the RAW files accessible in case I ever needed them again.

Working in the tech-support side of things, I see lots of people who never backup their data. Once their hardware fails, they lose everything. Data recovery is an option, but it can be anywhere from hundreds to thousands of dollars.

Moral of the story: back up your photos to an external hard drive, and if you can, back them up to two hard drives.

Dave Hamilton, producer and co-host of the Mac Geek Gab Podcast presented a number of backup options for the Mac and answered audience questions. Dave covered Apple's Time Machine and alternative options including Backblaze and Mozy.

I was on board with getting a Drobo until Dave mentioned how much they cost. Yowza. Perhaps I'll just use Super Duper and add an additional 2TB for my backup strategy.

Apparently @backblaze is pretty serious about the unlimited thing. I’m testing a restore today. t.co/8MRFX952

My Mac Book Pro. I grew up on PCs but wanted to try a Mac for years. I splurged on this one after we finished a project a year & a half ago. I love it. My next computer will be a desktop Mac. I guess I'll always have PCs around too, but I love my Mac. I still do all of my image editing on a PC because I don't have LR or PS for the Mac. All work on my blog and all video editing are done with the MBP. I use two separate LaCie 1TB external hard drives with this computer. One is a second HD and the other I use with Time Machine for a backup (as well as Backblaze off site). The onscreen image is of the Whitehouse.gov site.

Bulut depolama çözümleri gün geçtikçe çoğalıyor. Buna rağmen uygun fiyata yüksek kapasiteli bir depolama alanı sahibi olmak pek kolay olmuyor. Backblaze’in yeni bulut hizmeti ise çok uygun üyelik seçenekleriyle rakiplerini geride bırakıyor. Backblaze’in B2 adlı bulut sistemine kayıt olan herkes 10 GB depolama alanına kavuşuyor.

You know Flickr could really make a big comeback and become the king of photography on the internet again. A few things they should do in order to compete with other social media and win back their once covetable position.

1. Revamp the User Experience (UX) and Interface (especially the apps)

I really feel frustrated browsing flickr on web, phone or tablet. It feels like nothing has changed for a decade. Time for a spring clean and to move the furniture around. Why does the activity feed look so bad I don't even want to view it.

I come to flickr when I want to see real photography. Make explore front and centre. It should be the bread and butter. Make explore engaging and inspiring. The home page when you are not logged in has been freshed up. It actually looks modern and enticing but then you log in and its the same as it always was. It's like walking into an old shopping centre in your town that has had a facelift on the outside but the shops inside are still a bit run down.

2. Strengthen the Community Aspect

Flickr groups used to be the place to go. I think there is still some activity from the die hard members but generally there isnt much going on. Meanwhile photography groups on facebook have exploded in the last decade.

Make groups a place to see great photography on any topic. Make them searchable. Make them available to non photographers. Make mini apps so big groups can share their own communities.

3. Improve Organization and Discovery

As I said, I come to flickr when i want to see real photography. I want to be inspired when Im tired of the crap on IG and other networks. I want to find great photographers and connect in a meaningful way. Crack that and it's a gamechanger.

4. Consider Monetization

Not sure if this is a good idea, but maybe there should be some incentive for people to be more active. Maybe its not monetization maybe its discounts with brand partners when you post photos that get great feedback or maybe you rack up loyalty points or something. A little bit of gamification could go a long way.

5. Focus on the Professional Audience

I guess it's mostly enthusiasts that are keeping flickr going at the moment. I think a lot of pros left for greener hills where they could reach bigger audiences or like some pros just focused on the work and what would actually make money. Maybe attracting more pros back to the platform to rejuvenate it would also attract more general users. Some pro tools perhaps, lightroom integration, multiple image posts, galleries. Maybe a side service similar to backblaze that includes Flickr Pro and you get a double whammy. I probably have more ideas...

Back in the day I loved Flickr, I was a die hard user at the start... but time passed.

I would love to see Flickr make a comeback. I still visit flickr occasionally and upload when I think about it but when I am on here it feels like something is lacking. I feel like there is nowhere online that is truly for photography. IG is poo and flickr is still dedicated to photography but in my opinion it is limping.

I believe 2025 is the time where their is opportunity to become great again. I would love flickr to return to the vibrant, buzzing platform it once once. Somewhere that felt inspiring, local and safe. Flickr, if you guys are listening I want you to know I'm rooting for you.

Just wrote this as a little rant. Does anyone agree? Would love to hear others opinions...

Have you ever lost valuable data on because of a hard drive failure? Lost a USB drive? Just accidentally deleted a file that you really needed?

Data loss happens!

It's actually easy to put together a working backup system that will give you good data protection and the piece of mind that goes along with it. The great news is that it doesn't have to be expensive or complicated and you probably already own most, if not all, of the equipment that you need.

Why backup?

Aside from simply wasting time recreating work you've already done here are several categories of documents that you should really consider having a backup for:

Tax/Accounting

Legal/Business

Customer Service

Intellectual Property

Production

Compliance (ISO, FDA or OSHA to name a few)

Losing data in these categories can be pointedly damaging to your business.

How to backup?

Download the worksheet in the resources section above and listen to the podcast and walk step by step how to put together a simple but flexible backup solution for your business.

What will you need?

Internet Service

Printer/Scanner (if you need to backup paper documents)

External hard drive

Online backup solution such as Crashplan, Carbonite, iDrive or Backblaze (there are more)

So that's about it folks... It's time to roll up our sleeves and get to work!
