Even though it was set to continuously backup, it apparently hadn't done so since September 21st. Scared the hell out of me, going back to doing regular backups again now too.
I thought I would post an old shot (already exported as jpeg for usages other than flickr) while I wait for the replacement for my crashed Western Digital hard drive which held my Lightroom catalog and all of my raw photo files.
The hard drive was still under warranty but Western Digital really has been slow in getting me a replacement. It's currently shipped although the tracking doesn't have anything beyond "Billing information received" since last Friday.
In any case, if you're wondering, I'm still taking pictures (including the 52 weeks of Flavie) and I'll post new shots once I get the hard drive and my backup has been restored. That's the good news, I'm using Backblaze and all of my 110 GB of photos (except maybe the last day I took photos which didn't have time to be backed up before the drive crashed) are still safe, waiting to be downloaded and restored into a new hard drive.
Grant Hutchinson kick started the screenshot group I created way back in 2007 again, so I figured I'd join in. Here are my prefPanes these days:
Apple Qmaster (part of Final Cut Studio)
Connect 360 (rarely use this because of the tv)
Logitech Control Center
Digidesign Mbox 2 (for Pro Tools)
DivX
GrapUp (sadly, this doesn't work in Snow Leopard)
Growl (I have this turned off)
MySQL
Pen Tablet (for my rarely used Wacom tablet)
TextExpander (great for support emails)
And here's what I had in 2007.
Upload yours and add them to the group.
Google Reader Notifier, Google Tasks (x2), Backblaze, and Gmail Notifier in my menubar (way more items out of frame).
I hadn't originally planned on this being my photo of the day. I just took a few photos of my screen as "insurance," and then when the photo I had planned on using didn't turn out as good I wanted (despite numerous attempts), I decided to go with this.

My friend Nilay at Backblaze showed me his a couple weeks back and it blew me away.
For years, I have been using a various online cloud backup services for backing up my Mac. However, looking at the next renewal cost of my Backblaze service, I've decided not to renew and do a local backup instead using Carbon Copy Cloner and a new Samsung 2TB SSD. Foolishly, I ignored the warning that I should have connected the Samsung directly to the Mac rather than going via the USB hub on the second monitor and consequently is very slow (around 10hrs to do the 950GB on the Mac). When I have some more time next week, I'll rejig the external drive connections to that I can connect the Samsung as recommended.
Had a little photo shoot of Effy on the bed yesterday.
I've been completely out of hard drive space, on my laptop, due to my image libraries and couldn't even download my last couple of sd-cards. I'd already been through the usual frantic cleaning of every random file I could find, as well as using CCleaner and revo uninstaller to uninstall old programs. Nothing left to do but get a new drive.
After some research I ended up getting a 1TB Toshiba Canvio 3.0 Plus from Newegg. It's a USB 3.0, 2.5" form factor. It's awesome. So tiny and is powered by the usb cord, so no more power brick to mess with. Also set up an unlimited cloud backup service by Backblaze for around 4 bucks a month....not too bad.

As many of you know, we lost the first floor of our house and all of its contents to Hurricane Sandy when she struck New York on Monday. Thankfully everyone is safe. It has been an awful experience, but it could have been a lot worse. I am writing tonight to tell you how another disaster was averted. I lost my computer and all my local backups when 4 and a half feet of water rushed into our home. I love photography! Since 2001, when I bought my first digital camera, I have made nearly 40,000 photos, including documenting the first 4 years of my twins's lives, and scanned all my parents old photo albums. I had all my business data on the computer, tons of music and videos, and other important documents. Everything was wiped out! But thankfully I have been a subscriber to an awesome Cloud backup service called Backblaze for several years. I knew all my data was safe and secure. I sent the guys at Backblaze a note earlier this week and told them my story. They responded promptly and were sympathetic to my situation and eager to help. Tonight I received a package from them that contained a new USB drive with all my data on it. Thanks to Backblaze I didn't loose any data. I encourage all of you to protect your data and all those pictures and precious memories that can't be replaced. Go and sign up for Backblaze before it's too late, it's only $50 a year for all your data. www.backblaze.com
Dave Hamilton, producer and co-host of the Mac Geek Gab Podcast presented a number of backup options for the Mac and answered audience questions. Dave covered Apple's Time Machine and alternative options including Backblaze and Mozy.
I was on board with getting a Drobo until Dave mentioned how much they cost. Yowza. Perhaps I'll just use Super Duper and add an additional 2TB for my backup strategy.
Apparently @backblaze is pretty serious about the unlimited thing. I’m testing a restore today. t.co/8MRFX952
