Since it is about that time (back to school time that is), I wanted to do something fun with my boys. I wanted to pay tribute to my educational roots, so I asked my parents if I could borrow an old desk that once was used in one of the old country schools in my little community of Weissert, NE. I went to a country school until I was a Freshman, and for the last 3 or so years of country school, I was the only kid in my class, and one of only about 7-10 students. There aren't many schools like that still in this country. The books on the desk are primers used back in the 1920s, when my grandfather and grandmother were going to that old school (my son thought the 3rd grade book was pretty easy for him, lol!)l. The lunch pail, well, it was shared by my father and his siblings when they went to that same country school, and the baseball glove belonged to my father, and then it became mine when I began playing softball as a tween. Also, while this is not THE flag, one of my most vivid memories of my time in grade school is getting the honor of going to raise and take down the flag each day. We were taught the proper way to fold the flag, and it is still instilled in me to this day. Last, but not least, the hayfield and the old truck in the other photo are compliments of my husband and his family. I'm so proud that we get to share our blended rural roots with our children. It's a blessing to me that they get to know where they came from...that they know their story.

I went to back-to-school night at my daughter's high school. My son graduated from the same school. It occurred to me that I've been attending back-to-school night for a very looooooong time.
