i have problems with my back and it is giving me hell at the moment. a couple of years ago my other half bought me this torture device - it is a wooden rack to lie down on and the knobbly bits dig into the muscles. it can help a little but right now i think i need a physiotherapist on call!!

"This magnificent stela depicts Waxaklahun-Ubah-K'awil in the role of the Maize God as he danced at Creation. In the Classic-period story of Creation, the Maize Gods are the central characters in the drama that explains the processes of death and rebirth through confrontation with the Lords of Death in Xibalba. Classic-period imagery shows the Maize Gods being reborn from a snake, growing from infancy to adulthood, and being dressed in full regalia by beautiful young women. This regalia included a net skirt, a fish monster-and-shell belt, and a huge backrack carrying one of three animals who would become the Throne Stones of the Cosmic Hearth.
Once fully dressed, the Maize Gods danced in the company of dwarves and began the activities that led to the Fourth Creation. Waxaklahun-Ubah-K'awil reenacts this dance on Stela H, and to reinforce his identity, he wears a huge zoomorphic Maize God headdress with the leaves and ear of the plant arching over his head."

Maya Calendar: 9.19.10.0.0 (A.D. 820)
"The upper half of stela 8 was found by Peter Schmidt on the south side of Structure A-1 during the 1960s. The lower half was excavated nearby by Joseph Palacio in 1973.
Like Stela 1 and Stela 9, the theme of this monument concerns warfare and conquest. The ruler, whose eroded face is turned to his right, wears a feathered backrack tied around his chest. His hipcloth is beaded and shell or stone tinklers dangle from his belt. The central element on his belt is most likely carved greenstone head from which hang flat, stone plaques. The ruler wears a pectoral or chest ornament and carries a shield and spear.
The hieroglyphic text flanking the ruler's leg is too eroded to determine its meaning. Below the ruler's feet is another text which ocntains the barely visible outlines of the Naranjo Elbem Glyph. Emblem Glyphs were royal titles specific to individual cities, and the presence of the Naranjo Emblem Glyph here is an intriguing clue suggesting a relationship between these 2 cities.

Bicycles are used to carry just about any conceivable load. Masons rode with the sturdy, Chinese backrack piled high with bricks, rural wood-gatherers toted teetering loads of firewood, and I saw one guy riding a bike with a wedding cake balanced on the handlebars. Mostly, they carried passengers, as many as three at a time, with the one on the back cocking his feet up to avoid the pedals, another sitting on the bars, and a third sitting side-saddle on the top-tube, between the rider's legs.
