Maya polychrome earthenware bowl from the Late Classic period, depicting a procession of warriors. The figure here is dressed in ritual attire, including a large feathered headdress and decorative body paint, typical status symbols of the Maya elite.
The figure depicted is a Maya warrior prepared for ritual combat or a celebratory dance. Attached directly to the front of his headband is a distinct bird deity profile featuring a prominent round eye and extended wings. In Maya iconography, these avian components often represent a way (a personal spirit companion or alter ego) that granted the warrior supernatural power, speed, or ferocity during battle. He's holding a structured, open-frame object vertically in his right hand - this is a battle shield or a stylized standard used both to deflect blows in close-quarters combat and to display lineage insignia during military parades. The fan-like, reddish-brown structure extending behind his torso is a rigid feather back-rack. These served a dual purpose: they protected the warrior's back from projectiles and acted as visual anchors to make elite commanders easily identifiable to their troops on the battlefield. The warrior's entire face, torso, and legs are covered in dark charcoal or black pigment, commonly worn by active warriors, executioners, and participants in the ballgame. It signified aggressive intent, spiritual transformation, and a temporary detachment from everyday civilian life to enter a state of conflict or ritual sacrifice. Finally, the long, flowing textile panels hanging from his belt down to his feet indicate that he was not a common foot soldier, but a member of the hereditary elite class who commanded armies and participated in high-stakes diplomatic feasts.
Bowls and cups of this kind were symbols of power and status, and were frequently used as drinking vessels for chocolate (cacao) or as offerings in high-status burials.

It has been speculated that Kabah was occupied for a short time by Maya-Toltecs from Chichen Itza, and this portion of the building may date from that period.
What are often described as "Toltek" or Central Mexican warriors are featured on the eastern side of the Codz Poop. The background behind the figures shows patterns representing huge feathered backracks which the kings (or governors) are wearing. These backracks were presumably made of irridescent green quetzal feathers.
People use their imaginations in interesting ways sometimes, when they look at trees. Using our imaginations, we can transform trees into rocket ships, or clipper ships, or even people. I do this all the time. With this particular tree, a cork bark Japanese black pine cv. ‘Ondae’, I transform it into a very old Mayan warrior, replete with a backrack exploding with feathers and jade ornaments. He is also wearing a “hat” exploding with more feathers and jade.
He is old, so he is dancing slowly, mostly vertically, but making very clear arcs in space. With these arcs, he is describing time, all the time he has left to dance. He is so old, but in his mind he sees the combat, all the fights he has been in, all the defeats he has suffered, and all the victories awarded him. He is dancing slowly and I wonder if he can hear me shouting—It’s okay! You can rest.

The east face or back of COPAN STELA F in the Copán Great Plaza of the Copán Mayan Ruins in Honduras. The feathered backrack of 18 Rabbit is portrayed on the back of Stela F which is comprised of medallion shaped Groups of Four Mayan Glyphs Surrounded by Rope.
On its west face (on the other side), Stela F bears a portrait of Waxaklajuun Ub'aah K'awiil, the 13th Ruler of Copán, also known as 18 Rabbit.
Stela F was erected by the ruler 18 Rabbit.
Just on the other side of Stela F you can see a bit of the south side of the Altar of Stela F. Across the Great Plaza, to the left of Stela F is Stela B and sticking up above Stela B is Stela E, standing on top of the raised terrace defining the west side of the Great Plaza.

Dave from Maryland says, "A 60' oak tree landed on my new Dodge 3500 during the height of the Hurricane [Irene] last Saturday night. The back rack of my diamond HD cover most likely saved the 3-month old truck from being totaled. As you can see there is cab damage, but once we lifted the tree, we drove the truck out. The tree was impaled 3" into the post on the top of the backrack. We will send more once we have power in the aftermath of Hurricane Irene in Southern MD.
Exquisite and extremely well preserved highly detailed, very carefully painted Maya standing male figurine with towering headdress that almost certainly dates to the Late Classic period (600-900 AD) of florescent Maya civilization.
The surviving works of Mayan civilization range from the smallest objects to great buildings. Among the small-scale artworks of the Maya are many exquisite ceramic figurines only a few inches high. Despite their diminutive scale, these are also among the most fully realized of Maya sculptures in the round. This figurine vividly evokes a Maya lord costumed to impersonate a dynastic ancestor. The rectangular device over the mouth, along with the shield in one hand and the now-missing spear in the other, closely resemble the accoutrements of the nine ancestral figures in the sarcophagus chamber of Palenque's Temple of the Inscriptions. The figure's wide belt once supported a backrack of feathers, and his knee-length apron is marked with a symbol of the World Tree, the central axis of the Maya world. Elements of the complex costume below the headdress recur in other portrayals of Maya rulers; they define and reiterate their rank, and their position in the cosmos.
The role of these figurines in Maya belief and ritual is not clear, but their common appearance in Maya burials suggests a ritual function of some importance. Here the royal associations of the subject may indicate a rite performed by the king and commemorated through the making of this figurine.
