Streak of Chalk

By Michael Vance

“Streak of Chalk”/88 pages, $15.95 from NBM Publishing/art and words by Miguelando Prado/available in comics or book shops and by mail.

Never believe backcover blurbs on prose or graphic novels. They’re all exaggerated hype designed to sell books, right?

Surprise.

The blurb reads: [This book] “is a mysterious, multifaceted novel that can be read a number of ways … a new step in the direction of carefully crafted, intelligently written comics stories …”

The blurb is understated.

“Streak of Chalk” is possibly the best graphic novel of 1994.

A small Atlantic island shaped like an allegory of isolation and sexuality sits in sweltering summer heat. Its lighthouse sheds no light. Four weary visitors search for love or its illusion, physical death or spiritual life. And not all is as it seems on this streak of chalk.

This island as well as the emotions of these characters are brilliantly communicated through color. A subtle, melancholy quiet is captured by pastels on varying colors of paper. Never crossing into despair, illustrations rise from somber, rich purples, greens, and blacks to an explosion of gay yellows, blues, and emerald greens. In fact, this art must be read, slowly and carefully. To not do so is to miss layers of meaning … and lots of words.

A semi-transparent film was used to apply lettering that is sometimes almost obscured by the deep colors beneath. This glitch cannot diminish the power and beauty of this graphic novel for adults.

Adults? “Streak of Chalk” does contain infrequent profanity, nudity, and sexual situations.

“Streak of Chalk” is the premier title under an NBM imprint that promises “novels in the true sense about exploring our lives, our feelings, our experiences. At times up-lifting, at times controversial – always insightful and enriching. Here are the most intelligent comics the world has to offer.

So far, so true.

MINIVIEW: “The Art of Manara”. Beautiful, “poster” art of sexual fantasies; you decide if this album is “erotica”, as advertised, or something lesser. I’ve decided it is lush color, engrossing composition, and accurate, simplified anatomy. For adults only.

At the other side of the backcover is also a guiding plate.

This is at the position of the Filmdetect Roller.

I reviewed the record and made it available to download at antigravitybunny.bogspot.com

Thank you Karen for sending me pictures of my quilt!

This is the backcover of the new spring issue of Quiltmania Magazine! My Plant a Garden Quilt!

First step in preparing the Iskra for the ruby red window is to remove the leather from the backcover (of course, when you would use a very basic red window, removing the leather is probably not necessary).

I did this by wetting the leather with water. The KMZ factory used a kind of contact glue which is, unfortunatly, not easily dissolved by water. So i did this job very slowly to avoid tearing.

After removal blow the metal bone dry with a hairblower to avoid corrosion.

The blue arrows point to rivets. Because some of these are deteriorated i shall have to replace these.

Backcover reads "Publicité M.L.C.C. Paris" and "RIEGEL, Imp. Neuilly"

The second compilation of my favourite record label, Bacillus, published in 1973. It's not as good as the first one because there is one bad song on it (Midnight Circus), but the rest is brilliant, as usual. The front cover is terrible, so I only post the back cover here.

The Film Pressure Plate of the Iskra is just screwed to the tongues.

Easy to remove unless you are unlucky like me and encounter a screw which is so far deteriorated that the scewdriver has no hold any more. Had to grind one of the 2 screws away.

To make matters worse also 1 of the rivets that hold the tongues has lost its head !

This backcover is realy in a bad state but strangely enough only from the inside.
