Matchless prose from this most admirable wordsmith and travel writer par excellence.
First published in 1933 my edition is a near mint 1940 Reprint Society edition and tells of an expedition to the Matto Grosso in a (fruitless) search for answers to the mystery disappearance of an earlier expedition led by one Colonel Fawcett. Fleming’s own expedition led by the altogether less exalted and most untrustworthy Major Pringle flirts with near farce in the best tradition of gentlemen amateurs. Years ago I read his News from Tartary but Brazilian Adventures has sat unread on my shelves for many many years in that category subconsciously labeled as ‘pleasures and delights delayed for a future occasion’; books in stock if you will. I must track down a copy of One’s Company of which Vita Sackville West claims ‘ one reads him for literary delight and for the pleasure of meeting an Elizabethan spirit allied to a modern mind’ .
Can’t wait.

Despite the caymans swimming nearby, University of Michigan students jump into a small river to refresh themselves near the U-M student run Pantanal Center for Education and Research in Pantanal in Brazil. The U-M based student organization Pantanal Partnership conducts a series of basic engineering and water sanitation workshops at the schools in the towns in and around Pantanal, the largest wetlands in the word. University of Michigan students teach pupils from Pantanal area schools the importance of clean drinking water and together they build sand-based water filters. The UM students also build wind turbines and biodigesters out of local materials in Pantanal. May 27, 2013.
