I had heard about Bobby long before I had the pleasure of meeting him. This man is a painting powerhouse and puts in a 12 hour day, 6 days a week at his roadside studio near Dilli Diwarja where he pumps out Bollywood mudflaps and the occasional rickshaw-interior portrait painting. He painted all portraits for the Bollywood Soul exhibition. Fuller exhibition description here.

Experimenting with strobes in an impromptu portrait session with my friend Bobby as a patient guinea pig. I've only ever used flash with digital TTL cameras - this was my large format film camera, so all done manually!!!
One potato-masher type Metz flash head at 1/4 power (can't remember the model) reflected into a medium white umbrella (camera right and slightly above, about 1 1/2 feet from subject for wrap-around effect), with an A0 sized white card as a reflector. Exposure calculated with a Shepherd flash meter at f5.6, 1/100th second (though leaf shutter, so could have synced at any speed)
Shot on FP4+ 4x5 inch sheet film at 100iso and developed in Ilfotec DD-X (1+4)
Camera: Linhof Color Kardan 45
Lens: Schneider Symmar 150/5.6, Compur shutter
Bobby, is a fixture around town, he's been sleeping rough since the first of July, the other day when I asked where his camp was, he just snorted and said, "wherever I can lay my head". He's been one of my subjects for a half dozen years or so from the beginning of this essay, I know better than to pester him...It's taken a long time for him to fit me into his agenda or better said his congregation of acquaintances, he is very well spoken...That day he was complaining about high rents at the Motel. I've been keeping my eyes peeled for a place for him to crash, nothing fancy, a rooming house would do...this afternoon I ran into Bushey at the George Street Beer Store, we were both returning a few empties, as soon as I brought up Bobbys name, Bushey offered a lead for a room in the same Tortilla Flats style house that he lives in on Bolivar Street, "just $400 a month and we have cable, there are lots of them old movies on that Bob likes"...Now finding Bob to give him the information is in itself a challenge as he keeps no regular company, hangs his hat nowhere in particular...it is more likely that I will just run into him as I did the other day....he's like a wolf, a lone wolf if you will, from time to time I see him with companions, sharing a jug or joke or both, a few years back he was with a drifter, the two of them were wearing parkas, Bob looked a lot like Papa Smurf that day as if a mother had hand tied the chin ropes on the hood of the winter jacket, his big grey facial hairs protruded out along with the eyebrows, the coat was made of a thick dark blue nylon material more fashionable in the 60's, a driving March rain was pouring off the jacket past his boots and knee high red topped work socks, the cuffs of his lined pants were tucked into the socks...from aways I watched as he coached his new friend in the 'Art of Survival' he reached into the large green steel trash bin behind Rileys, a local eatery and grabbed a cold baked potato, put it to his mouth and bit off a chunk, I heard him say to his trainee as he went for another handful of grub, " pretty good eh"....this summer past, I saw him behind the old Little Lake Cemetery, sitting on the railroad tracks, pondering, resting, he probably had just walked into town from his Blue Jay Motel room east on Highway #7, I did not want to disturb his time, I kept going...how many grown men do you know that sit on the tracks these days? The boy in Bob is very near, very near indeed.
Here's a photo of my sister's rabbit Bobby.
UPDATE: Some sad news & that is Bobby has died suddenly so this photo is now dedicated to his memory, R.I.P Bobby.
He was named Bobby, when we got him, because of his very short but furry tail...
too many nicknames to list at this time...

Greyfriars Bobby's Bar occupies the ground floor of a row of Georgian houses adjoining the historic Candlemakers' Hall, built in 1722. The name of the bar is inspired by an Edinburgh legend of a scruffy Skye terrier called Bobby. When his owner died in 1858, Bobby faithfully watched over his grave and was buried close to his master in the Greyfriars Kirkyard in 1872.
